Heat warning in effect: Southern Manitoba to sizzle through Tuesday

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, with daytime highs expected to reach the low to mid-30s and overnight lows staying at or above 16°C.

The warning is in effect from Sunday through Tuesday.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions as extreme heat can pose serious health risks, especially for young children, older adults, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

Mother’s Day brunch highlights the need to support single moms

Dozens of people gathered at Abundant Life Baptist Church on Saturday morning for a special Mother’s Day brunch in support of Selah Place, a ministry that helps single mothers in need.

The event brought together families, church members, and community supporters for a morning of food, fellowship, and fundraising. Volunteers served up fresh pancakes, coffee, and conversation as guests browsed through a silent auction and a pop-up clothing sale—all to raise support for Selah Place’s work with moms navigating challenging circumstances.

Indigenous groups keen to see Pope Leo continue reconciliation work

Indigenous groups in Canada say they want to see Pope Leo XIV continue the reconciliation work started by his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.

Francis was recognized as an ally of Canada's Indigenous Peoples and was known for advancing reconciliation efforts and apologizing — both in the Vatican and in Canada — for the Catholic Church's role in widespread abuses at residential schools.

His visit to Canada in 2022 was described as a "penitential pilgrimage" as Francis insisted on meeting with Indigenous survivors of residential schools and hearing their stories.
