Dozens gather for benefit concert raising thousands in support of Freedom International School

Dozens of people gathered at Freedom International School last week to take in a special concert.

Share the Night featured stories and songs from Howard Jolly, The Rising Above Band and the FIS Dance Ministry Team, with all funds raised supporting the school.

"We had this idea of wanting to find a common space between Manitoba's Indigenous culture and Metis culture and the cultures that are represented within our school, which is a lot of newcomer youth from various countries and cultures," said Cyndi Wiebe, director of communications with Freedom International School.

Wolseley churches fundraise for new ceilings with handbells

The bells at Westminster United Church in Wolseley have been ringing out over the city for well over a century, but its sounds have been somewhat muted in recent years. 

The church’s congregation, along with numerous local arts organizations, have been unable to use the sanctuary space because of structural deficiencies in the ceiling. With estimates to fix that ceiling running into the millions of dollars, the future of the entire building remains uncertain. 

From jungle to city: Missionaries bring hope to Colombia’s displaced Embera people

An Indigenous group in Colombia known as the Embera people is experiencing the gospel in unique ways thanks to one missionary couple. 

Before moving to Medellín to work with the Embera, missionaries, Travis and Beth Burkhalter, worked in the Amazon jungle. 

The Embera people group were driven from their homeland of Chocó and has been living in poverty and under the rule of drug cartels for a few decades. 

Fighting disinformation: CMU hosts public forum with justice minister and media experts

On Thursday, Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) in Winnipeg will be hosting an event that's open to the public called 'Social Media Disinformation: How to Prevent, Identify, and Combat.'

"This event is from Massey College from the University of Toronto, and it's kind of like Massey College on the road," says the president of CMU, Cheryl Pauls. "There will be a time of panel and some incredible leaders in the field to speak together, learn together, and find ways of being hopeful."

It was a full house at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba on Tuesday night, as Winnipeggers gathered to mourn and remember the victims of a tragic incident in Vancouver.

Over the weekend, an SUV plowed through a Filipino street festival in the city, killing 11 people and injuring several others. 

The vigil in Winnipeg honoured the lives that were lost and offered support to families and communities affected by the devastating event.

Ontario, Prairies blocked Liberals from an election-night majority blowout

Elections Canada says more than 19.5M voters cast a ballot in federal election

Elections Canada says more than 68 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the federal election — more than 19.5 million people.

While this election was widely expected to see increased turnout, it did not surpass the record set in March 1958, when 79.4 per cent of eligible Canadians voted.

But the nearly 68.7 per cent turnout was the best since the 1993 federal election, which saw 69.6 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot.
