Federal government plans to give $250 cheques to millions of Canadians, cut GST
The Liberal government plans to temporarily lift the federal sales tax off a slew of items just in time for Christmas and send cheques to millions of Canadians this spring, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday.
"Our government can't set prices at the checkout, but we can put more money in people's pockets," Trudeau said at a press conference in Toronto alongside Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Canada-wide warrant issued for semi driver after fatal crash west of Altona
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a semi driver involved in a collision that claimed the life of a mother and daughter west of Altona last week.
The two-vehicle crash happened on Nov. 15, shortly after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Provincial Road 201 and Provincial Road 306, about 13 kilometres west of Altona.
The RCMP says they believe the semi drive did not stop at a stop sign and struck the other vehicle.
Two women robbed and assaulted outside of retail store in Polo Park area
Two women are recovering after being robbed outside of a store in the Polo Park area.
Winnipeg police say on Tuesday, Nov. 19 just before 7 p.m., two women in their 20s were walking near a retail business when they were approached by a man who demanded their personal property. He began assaulting them, striking both of them in the upper body with a large-edged weapon. He then stole one of their purses before fleeing the area.
Both victims suffered minor upper-body injuries and were taken to hospital in stable condition.
Winnipeg Sea Bears player Chad Posthumus, dead at 33
The Winnipeg Sea Bears are mourning the loss of one of their players.
Chad Posthumus, the first player to sign with the Winnipeg Sea Bears passed away on Wednesday.
"Stricken by a brain aneurysm on Nov. 9 and then by complications arising from corrective surgery, Chad fought hard but was unable to recover," said the team in a post on Instagram. "Chad was and will always remain the face of our team."

An international group led by a Canadian is in Rome this week to push the Catholic Church to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on abuse by clergy.
Newfoundlander Gemma Hickey is the board president of non-profit Ending Clergy Abuse, which is advocating for the church to adopt widespread rules requiring any priest or deacon found guilty of sexual abuse to be removed permanently from ministry.
