The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Unsung Hero take centre stage at Movieguide Awards

A new Christmas film shot in Winnipeg and directed by The Chosen's Dallas Jenkins was recognized over the weekend at the 2025 Movieguide Awards

Based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever follows six siblings, the Herdmans, who sneak into church searching for snacks and walk away with the lead roles in the town pageant.

The film shows viewers how the mischievous stars unwittingly teach a community the true meaning of Christmas. 

'God saved him': Family credits faith for son’s miraculous recovery after school shooting

A young man critically injured in a school shooting in December of last year is on the road to recovery. 

14-year-old River Clardy was left fighting for his life after a 15-year-old girl opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin on Dec. 16, 2024. 

The shooting left three people, including the shooter, dead and six others injured, two with critical injuries. 

Fire in St. Boniface leaves 3 people hospitalized

A fire in a St. Boniface apartment building sent three people to hospital Monday evening. 

The blaze broke out just before 8:30 p.m. in a complex in the 400 block of Langevin Street. 

When firefighters arrived, smoke was pouring out of the building. Crews were able to get the fire under control within an hour. 

Three people were taken to hospital in unstable condition. 

The city called in its Animal Services Agency and Emergency social Services team to provide support for pets and displaced residents. 

Nomadic herdsmen sing Scriptures to their people

In the Northwestern corner of Namibia lies the village of Opuwo. Its name means "end of the road" in Dhimba, the language spoken by residents of Opuwo. But for the Himba people who first heard the Gospel there, Opuwo was not the end of the road. It was the beginning. 

Michael Cardy with MegaVoice tells the story of a local pastor in that region who first felt the Lord calling him to reach the Himba people in 2017. 

At the time, Scripture in Dhimba was scarce. 

City seeks public input on design of $118M recreation campus in Waverley West

A new recreation campus is set ot be built in Waverly West and Winnipeggers are being asked for their feedback on the design.

Residents can do this online or by attending an open house later this month. 

The South Winnipeg Recreation Campus will be built in multiple phases at a location on Bison Drive. 

The first phase of the design includes three gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, a cafe, serving kitchen, an indoor walking/running track, a fitness area, a child care centre and an outdoor spray pad.

Missing teen safely located: RCMP

Selkirk RCMP say a missing 17-year-old girl has been found safe.

RCMP say the girl had not been seen since March 8. They had originally sent out a missing person alert on the evening of March 10.

In an update issued Tuesday, Mounties expressed concern that she may be at risk of exploitation.

She was last seen on March 8, around 8 p.m. at a home in northwest Winnipeg.

On Tuesday, a short time after their second plea for help, the Selkirk RCMP sent out another release saying the teen had been found safe and returned home. 

Manitoba Progressive Conservatives have 11,000 members as April leadership vote looms

Just under 11,000 people have taken out memberships in the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba in time to vote for next month's leadership race — up from 2,200 members the party had when the race was launched last summer, party officials said Monday.

The party did not release a breakdown of how many memberships were sold by each of the two candidates before the Feb. 28 cutoff. Neither did the candidates' teams.

Trudeau pushes for RCMP reform during final days in office

During his final days in office, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing for long-promised reform to the RCMP. 

A government report released Monday, which highlights concerns about Canada's capacity to meet "the new threat environment," says it's time to modernize the police service to focus on "the most serious forms of criminality."

It says the government’s vision should be to establish the RCMP as a "world class, intelligence-led, federal policing organization."

'Between two elephants': Canadian farmers feeling China tariffs, worry about U.S.

Prairie farmers say planned Chinese retaliatory tariffs on Canadian agricultural products are causing loads of uncertainty, while threats of U.S. levies and industry issues have created further problems. 

Bill Prybylski, president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, says China's 100 per cent tariffs on canola oil, meal and peas scheduled for next week are already being felt, as markets have taken a hit.
