Bernhard Penner, 89, of Winkler formerly of the Rosefarm District, passed away Saturday, May 17th at his residence. He is survived by 3 daughters, 1 sister, and their families. He was predeceased by his wife Minnie, 1 daughter in infancy and 1 granddaughter in infancy. 
The celebration of life for Bernhard Penner will be held Thursday, May 22nd at 11am at Winkler EMMC with burial prior to the service at Rosefarm Cemetery. 
Donations may be made to Red Rock Bible Camp. 

Dallas Stars fan launches memorial fund after Scheifele plays through tragedy

A Dallas Stars fan from Ontario has launched a memorial fund in honour of Mark Scheifele, following the sudden passing of the NHL star’s father, Brad.

In a post on reddit, a Stars fan donated to Kidsport Canada and asked other Stars fans to do the same after Mark still played in game six of the second round series of the Stanley Cup playoffs, just hours after finding out about his father's death. 

'God is good': American Idol winner gives God all the glory

The latest winner of American Idol is still trying to process the big win. 

On Sunday, the top three contestants, physical education teacher Jamal Roberts, 27, John Foster, 18, and stay-at-home Christian mom Breanna Nix, 25, performed duet songs alongside some big-name artists. 

Breanna Nix sang Daddy's DNA with Christian artist Brandon Lake. Jamal Roberts sang "Liar" and "Unpretty" alongside Jelly Roll, and John Foster performed with one of the judges, Luke Bryan, singing a medley of country songs. 

After 11 years, Christian tracks hitting Billboard's Hot 100 chart

Brandon Lake and Forrest Frank are making waves as their songs have broken out on Billboard's Hot 100 songs from any genre. 

Within the past year, names such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar have often been seen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, two Christian artists have broken through recently, defying music genre boundaries. 

After 11 years without Christian artists on it, other than Christmas music, the chart is showing that Christian music has a place. 

Wildfire risk remains high across Manitoba despite rain, rural fire ban remains in place

Although much of the province received rain over the long weekend and temperatures dropped, the province says the risk for wildfires across Manitoba remains high as forests remain dry.

While the Lac du Bonnet wildfire has now been contained, the fires in Nopiming and Whiteshell remain out of control. 

The Manitoba Wildfire Service is currently responding to 13 active wildfires, with an overall 81 fires to date. 

Woman assaults officer after alleged impaired crash in downtown Winnipeg

A 28-year-old woman is in custody after assaulting an officer. 

On Sunday at around 3 a.m., officers were called to the 100 block of Garry Street for the report of a crash involving a parked vehicle. 

When they arrived, they found a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze on its roof. Police say the vehicle had collided with a parked 2022 Audi A5, causing it to roll over. Both vehicles sustained significant damage. 

The 28-year-old driver and her 18-year-old male passenger were both checked by paramedics but did not suffer serious injuries. 

Winnipeg lifts fire ban after weekend rain

The city of Winnipeg has officially lifted the fire ban after May long weekend's rainfall. 

On May 5, Winnipeg issued a fire ban because of dry conditions that contributed to many wildfires, including in Winnipeg's areas

Residents of the city can now have open fires, backyard fire pits, shoot off fireworks, light fires in pits in City parks, and the use of solid fuel-burning appliances.

Statistics Canada's April inflation data to show impact of carbon price removal

Statistics Canada is set to release inflation data for April today.

Market data shows economists on average expect the annual rate of inflation cooled to 1.6 per cent last month, from 2.3 per cent in March.

The Liberal government eliminated the consumer carbon price at the start of April, offering motorists some relief at the pump.

Last month also marked the first full month of tariffs between Canada and the United States, though both sides have offered some exemptions in the trade dispute.

Top finance officials from G7 countries gather in Banff for three-day summit

High-ranking officials from the world's top economies are in Banff, Alta., this week for a three-day summit that will cover topics including the global economy, the war in Ukraine and artificial intelligence.

The meeting comes during a period of heightened instability as U.S. President Donald Trump continues his tariff-driven effort to bring industry to American soil, leading many countries to reconsider their trade relationships with the United States and other trading partners.
