No tricks, just treaters, say Police Chiefs after quiet Halloween night

It was a beautiful Halloween night, with relatively warm temperatures for this time of year and hardly a tickle of wind. It was also a great night for local police services, with essentially no related disturbances reported.

Winkler Chief Ryan Hunt says his department did not receive any Halloween related calls, with it being a fairly normal evening as far as calls for service.

Morden Chief Brad Neduzak echoed those sentiments, noting it was a very quiet night.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira is the West Division finalist for the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award and Most Outstanding Canadian. Oliveira led the league in rushing yards (1,353) for the second year in a row becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Andrew Harris from 2017-2019. He also led the CFL in yards from scrimmage (1,829). Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund are the East Division finalists for Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian.

New Brunswick woman who lost 2 sons to PTSD named national Silver Cross Mother

Maureen Anderson lost both her sons to their overseas service in the Canadian Army, even if they died years later and a continent away from the hot dust and violence of the Afghanistan war.

Growing up, Ron Anderson was more serious, “a little fighter,” his mother recalls. His younger brother Ryan was quieter, softer. Both joined the military before they finished high school, already certain of what their career paths would be.

“My boys were very kind to me, and I miss them terribly,” Anderson said in an interview this week from her home in Oromocto, N.B. 

Mounties bust massive B.C. drug 'supermarket' lab linked to organized crime

Mounties have dismantled what they say is the largest, most sophisticated illicit drug "superlab" in Canada that had been acting as a "supermarket" for organized crime. 

Police say the lab mass produced and distributed the powerful opioid fentanyl and methamphetamine across Canada and internationally.

David Teboul, assistant commissioner with the RCMP's Pacific region, told a news conference Thursday that dismantling the lab “undoubtedly saved thousands of lives in Canada and abroad.” 

Nomination deadline approaches for King's Coronation Medal honouring community contributions

We've seen the Queen's Jubilee Medal program celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 50 years as monarch, followed by the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal commemorating 75 years on the throne. A medal is forged for each significant milestone of the monarchy in Canada, and the next is the King's Coronation Medal.

Portage-Lisgar MP Branden Leslie says the medals haven't been delivered yet, but 20 have been allocated to his office for the region’s representation.

A festive event that gives back to the community has returned to kick off the holiday season with pancakes, syrup, and sausages.  

An environment of cheer 

The Winkler Christmas Cheerboard’s Holly Jolly Breakfast happens on Saturday, November 2nd at Central Station in Winkler.  

“I really like seeing all the people that come out and join us for that,” says Lori Derksen of Winkler Christmas Cheerboard. “We have some really great . . . local talent giving us some entertainment for the morning.”
