Georges Bruneau, 97, of Winnipeg formerly of St. Jean-Baptiste, passed away Saturday, October 12th at Health Sciences Centre. He is survived by his wife Celima, 2 daughters, 3 sons, and their families. He was predeceased by 3 sisters and 3 brothers. 
The Mass of Resurrection for Georges Bruneau will be held Saturday, October 19th at 2pm at St. Jean-Baptiste Catholic Church with burial at the parish cemetery.

Connie Toews, 63, of Altona passed away Tuesday, October 15th at Altona Memorial Health Centre. She is survived by 3 sisters, 4 brothers, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Peter and Eva Toews, 1 sister and 1 brother-in-law. 
The funeral service for Connie Toews will be held Saturday, October 19th at 2pm at South Park Mennonite Brethren Church, Altona with burial at Altona Cemetery.

Sikh groups call for Indian consulates to be shut down in Vancouver, Toronto

Representatives of a British Columbia Sikh temple whose president was shot dead last year, as well as the Sikh independence group he was involved in, say their communities won't feel safe until India's consulates in Vancouver and Toronto are shut down.

That's after the Canadian government expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, and the RCMP announced on Monday it had evidence of their alleged involvement in crimes including homicide and extortion targeting the so-called Khalistan independence movement.

The Winkler Flyers are riding a five-game win streak. Niklas Gudmundson had a four-point night with three goals and an assist and Liam Ernst stopped all 19 shots he faced as the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions bounced the Selkirk Steelers 9-0 Tuesday night at the ICON Arena. Blake Matheson, Brody Beauchemin, Mathys Blanchette, Kam Thomas, Max Lavoie and Brady Craik also scored for the Flyers. The Steelers have lost back-to-back games after starting the season with 10 straight wins. 

Minister says Canadian Forces to help stranded Air India passengers in Iqaluit

Canada's emergency preparedness minister says the passengers of an Air India flight that landed in Iqaluit due to a bomb threat remain stuck there, and he has approved a request for the military to help them.

Harjit Sajjan posted on X late Tuesday that the airline "hasn't found a solution" after the plane landed in Nunavut's capital with 211 passengers on board earlier in the day and that they are "stranded."

Five years of fund raising and planning came to head Tuesday morning as children were welcomed into the new Kiddie Sunshine Daycare facility in Altona for the first time.

Morden receives reports of motorized traffic on new gravel walking path

The new gravel pathway west of 19th Street in Morden is receiving some unwanted traffic. It was built earlier this Fall to provide city residents and students a way to walk from Wardrop and Manchester Streets, as well as Dublin Drive, to Ecole Discovery Trails, ultimately connecting with Park Hill Drive.

Mayor Nancy Penner says the city has received reports of motorized vehicles utilizing the walking path.

Winkler councillor by-election set for December 12th

A municipal by-election will be held in Winkler on Thursday, December 12th. The passing of Don Fehr in late September meant there was an open seat on council, with about two years left in the current term.

Prospective candidates have until November 6th at 5 p.m. to submit their nomination papers and register, and must do so before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.  Assistant City Manager Wendy Klassen has been named the Senior Election Official for the by-election.

FCC releases 2024 Mid Year Farmland Values Report

Farm Credit Canada's mid-year report shows cultivated farmland values rose by an average of 5.5 per cent nationally for the first half of 2024.

Over the 12 months from July 2023 to June 2024, there was a 9.6 per cent increase, representing a slowdown compared to the previous 12-month period (January to December 2023).

FCC's Vice President and Chief Economist J.P. Gervais says for the second consecutive year, Saskatchewan recorded the highest average six-month increases at 7.4 per cent, Alberta was at 4.6 per cent, and Manitoba 3.9 per cent.
