Firefighters have cleared the scene after a long day and night at the scene of a fire that destroyed a business that's been a fixture in the City of Winkler for over three decades.

The blaze broke out Thursday around noon at Janzen's Paint and Decorating and spread quickly throughout the building. Morden Fire Rescue arrived on the scene about an hour after the fire started to assist with the efforts.

The blaze broke out around lunch today, and it didn't take long for the fire to spread throughout the building, according to witnesses.

A toxic plume of smoke filled the sky, forcing police to temporarily close Highway 32 between Highway 14 and Cargil Road due to reduced visibility.
    
Highway 32 is now fully open to traffic.

Winkler police have laid a series of charges against a 23-year-old resident after an incident on Saturday.
    
Shortly after midnight, police received a call from a woman reporting her boyfriend had tried to run over her with the car and had also physically assaulted her. She was brought to the hospital by paramedics for examination. 
    
Police found the boyfriend at a different home and placed him under arrest. Officers also located a firearm that belonged to the boyfriend which was determined to have been stolen.

A Blowing Snow Advisory has ended for the Red River Valley and parts of the Pembina Valley, and now our weather attention turns to the very cold conditions settling in this weekend.

Two men in their twenties are facing numerous charges after they were arrested late Sunday night in Morden.

According to the Morden Police Service, officers observed a vehicle travelling on Thornhill Street at a fast rate of speed.

Police activated their emergency lights and siren and observed the suspect vehicle speed up and make a quick turn down a side street. The vehicle then ran through to a stop sign and make another quick turn before pulling to the side of the road.

As people look for ways to stay active, and enjoy the winter weather, the Morden Police Service is reminding residents to do so in a respectful and lawful manner.

With many public areas to enjoy different activities on and around Lake Minnewasta and the Dead Horse Creek, police warn venturing too far off the ice, or trails, could be trespassing.

Police are reminding people to be respectful of property owners in and around these areas, and ask you respect their right to privacy.
