Katherine Krahn nee Olfert, 93, of Winkler formerly of Miami, passed away Monday, September 1st at her residence. She is survived by 1 daughter, 1 son, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Bernhard and 2 sons.  
The funeral service for Katherine Krahn nee Olfert will be held Saturday, September 6th at 11am at Winkler Grace Mennonite Church with burial at Winkler Cemetery.

Kenton Schellenberg, 69, of Steinbach passed away Saturday, August 9th at Bethesda Regional Health Centre. He is survived by 1 sister, 2 brothers, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Erdman and Romelda Schellenberg. 
The funeral service for Kenton Schellenberg will be held Friday, September 5th at 1:30pm at Steinbach EMC with burial at Heritage Cemetery. 
Viewing will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Ottawa sets 100-day timeline to fix CRA call centre delays

The federal finance minister said Tuesday he wants to address service delays at the Canada Revenue Agency within 100 days, even as Ottawa plans spending cuts across the public service.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne set the timeline in a letter to Liberal MP Karina Gould, chair of the House of Commons finance committee, which was posted to his X account Tuesday morning.

In that letter, he said it's "increasingly apparent" the CRA is not meeting Canadians' standards.

Plett loved teammates and memories from Canada Summer Games

17-year-old Jadyn Plett from Mitchell was part of Team Manitoba that participated in the recent Canada Summer Games, and the star says she really enjoyed the experience.

"It was so fun," Plett says of representing Manitoba on the big stage. "It was unreal at first, I don't think I realized how big of a deal that it was to represent Manitoba as the first girls baseball team at the Canada Summer Games. It was a fun, and cool experience."

The 16th annual Tractor Drive is rolling up, and the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) is revving to go.

Robert Goertzen, executive director at MHV, has been part of the showcase for over seven years. 

“It’s a wonderful tradition,” he says. 

“It’s open to anybody with a tractor, and we’re not really that fussy about how antique it is,” he says. 

MLA Konrad Narth reflects on busy summer in the southeast

La Vérendrye MLA Konrad Narth says this summer has been both busy and productive as he worked alongside communities across the southeast to address local challenges and celebrate regional milestones.

Although the Manitoba Legislature was not in session, Narth said his schedule remained full, with one highlight being the grand opening of the Southeast Event Centre in Steinbach. He described the event as a reflection of the community’s growth and ambition.

New direction at Jake Epp Library earns praise from council

The Jake Epp Library in Steinbach is seeing renewed optimism after a period of transition. 

City Councillor Jac Siemens, who represents council on the library board, says the board was challenged earlier this year to review its operations when it requested additional funding from the city. He notes the board responded by adjusting fees, strengthening oversight, and preparing a detailed request for the 2026 budget. 

Federal NDP launches leadership race

The federal NDP officially launched the race to find its next leader on Tuesday, leaving seven months for interested candidates to mount a campaign.

The next NDP leader will be elected at a national convention in Winnipeg in March.

In a news release, the party says there has been strong interest in the leadership contest since Aug. 20, when the application packages were made available.

SEMHL announces Aces have been removed from the league for 2025/26 season

The South-Eastern Manitoba Hockey League announced Tuesday that an earlier decision from Hockey Manitoba has been reversed, meaning the Ste. Anne Aces are no longer part of the SEMHL, and will not play in the 2025-26 season.
