Debate over The INN dominates public hearings on zoning and community plan
Steinbach City Hall was a lively place Tuesday evening as around 40 people attended two public hearings at the regular City Council meeting. Of the 2 hour and 14 minute meeting, the hearings lasted approximately two hours as council heard from the public on the City’s proposed Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw, both of which are required by the province to be updated every five years.
CCGA's Advance Payments Program issues $310 million in cash advances first day
Earlier this week, the Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) issued their first cash advances with the 2025 Advance Payments Program for the upcoming growing year. More than 1750 producers across Western Canada received more than $310 million to finance their operations. Dave Gallant, Vice President of Finance and APP operations at CGA, talks about the benefits of the program for Western Canadian producers.
Main Street upgrades announced for St. Adolphe
St. Adolphe's Main Street will be upgraded this summer.
According to a provincial spokesperson, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is planning a project along Provincial Road (PR) 200 through St. Adolphe. The work will include asphalt resurfacing, catch basin replacement and minor curb rehabilitation.
Our province says the work will start at the PR 210 intersection and extend south along PR 200 for 1.8 kilometres.
According to the spokesperson, construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed this fall, weather permitting.
Double trouble, Remillard twins killing it with Selects
They've played together for years, but this season may be the most fun Lexi and Kali Remillard have had yet, as the twin-sensations were key parts to the Eastman Selects U18 AAA hockey team capturing the league title.
The two stars didn't start wreaking havoc in hockey, they actually got their start in ringette, according to Lexi. "It was a long time ago, but we started by playing ringette. One day, my dad suggested that we try something different. He just put us in hockey in St. Malo and we fell in love with it. We've been playing ever since."
Shift towards much warmer weather expected next week
Southern Manitoba could be experiencing double digit temperatures by the middle of next week.
That is according to Scott Kehler, a meteorologist with Weatherlogics. He notes for the last while we have been stuck in a weather pattern that has had frequent high-pressure systems coming down from the Arctic, blasting us with shots of cold air.
"We warm up a little bit but then just as that warmup is starting to really feel like spring, another Arctic air mass comes down and hits us," explains Kehler.

ROC Eastman aims to break barriers to recreation with new donation list
Recreation Opportunities for Children (ROC) Eastman has released a new set of donation requests for families in the region.
Steph McLean, a development coordinator and family recreation practitioner with the organization, says there may be some items that are harder to understand than others.
"Our donation request list is a bit unique because sometimes people will look at it and be like, 'What on earth does that have to do with recreation,’ or, ‘How is that a barrier (to recreation)?'" she says.

John Funk, 81, of Grunthal passed away Tuesday, April 1st at Bethesda Regional Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Anne, 1 daughter, 2 sons, and their families.
A memorial service for John Funk will be held Saturday, April 5th at 4pm at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with private family burial at Grunthal Cemetery.

Kleefeld daycare construction costs run higher than expected
The Reeve for Hanover says though construction costs ran higher than expected, the municipality now has a beautiful new daycare in Kleefeld.
It was in February 2023 that Kleefeld was awarded a new daycare through a joint provincial/ federal announcement. The original promise was for a 74-space daycare, which eventually grew by 30 spots.
