On Saturday, Mitchell welcomes teams from all over the province for the 9U Baseball Jamboree
Saturday is going to be a special day as U9 baseball teams from around the southeast and the province head to Mitchell for a fun event, the Baseball Jamboree.
"We're really happy with the turnout this year," an excited Byron Dueck explains. "We have 28 teams, represented by 13 different communities, all the way from Vita, Niverville, La Broquerie and even a team from Winnipeg. It's a great way to get together, play against some different competition, there is no score kept so everyone can just enjoy a great day of baseball."

Steinbach “rolled out the red carpet” for 55+ athletes
The 2025 Manitoba 55+ Summer Games came to a close in Steinbach on Wednesday after three full days of friendly competition, community spirit, and a lot of purple volunteer shirts.
More than 1,000 participants from across the province registered for this year’s event, which included slo-pitch, golf, bocce, pickleball, and the debut of beach volleyball as a demonstration sport.
Doug Graham, co-chair of the games, says the event went smoothly overall, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and the support of the community.

Some Manitoba residents who have taken refuge in Niagara Falls, Ont., after fleeing wildfires raging in their province say they're grateful for the hospitality but worry they won't have a home to return to once the flames die down.

'It's great to see.' Manitoba Premier praises Manitobans' generous spirit during Manitoba Day of Caring
"It's a very serious situation." That from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew in an update on the province's wildfire situation Thursday, who says fire fighters from across Manitoba and beyond continue to blazes on several fronts.
As of Thursday morning, Kinew said there were 16,800 evacuees registered in Manitoba. Many of which have been put up in hotels across Manitoba, occupying about 1,700 rooms.
He added, it's been great to see people step up and provide donations, volunteer at shelters and even take evacuees into their homes.
Locally owned retreat centre opens doors to wildfire evacuees, needs help
A Mitchell man who owns and operates Wilderness Edge Retreat and Conference Centre in Pinawa, says urgent help is needed to care for evacuees who are coming to stay on site.
Kevin Penner says he spoke with the Red Cross Thursday morning, and learned evacuees were being sent to Ontario and beyond because of space issues in Manitoba.
The province provides update on Manitoba wildfires
The Manitoba government delivered a wildfire update today, June 5.
The provincial state of emergency remains in effect, with 21 communities having declared local states of emergency and more than 18,000 evacuees now registered. There are likely many more evacuees who have not registered with the Canadian Red Cross.
