Suggestions for winterizing your yard

As we head into the middle of October and with the thought of snow unwelcoming, it’s still possible to start winterizing your yard before the colder weather arrives.  

Leslie Cornell, the owner of Cornell Design and Landscaping says that right now is the perfect time to start pruning and trimming your trees, bushes and herbaceous perennials.  Cornell is one of the architects of the Humboldt Urban Garden Sanctuary. 

How do you prevent maple bugs from overtaking your yard/house?

Maple bugs have definitely been the talk of Humboldt over the last few weeks, as large swaths of them have begun to attach themselves inside and outside of people's houses, garages, Manitoba Maple trees and everything in between.  

Dr. James Tansey, the province's entomologist says the reason people are seeing an influx of these pesky creatures in their yards is due to the changing of weather and seasons. 

Third Ukrainian humanitarian flight to touch down in Sask. on Oct. 25

On Tuesday, the government of Saskatchewan announced that its third humanitarian flight of roughly 200 Ukrainian refugees will touch down in the province.  

The flight is being arranged with humanitarian organizations Solidaire and Open Arms and is expected to land in Regina on Oct. 25.

Sask. Wildlife Federation is asking hunters to "Stay on Track" this season

Hunting season got underway recently, which means a lot of hunters around the province will be out in the wilderness either on foot or by use of ATV.  

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) along with the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) is asking hunters to “Stay on Track” this season and take extra precautions in high-risk areas to protect the wildlife and grasslands from wildfires.

Last Wednesday, the province released further details on its four-point action plan to recruit, train, incentivize, and retain healthcare workers, including nurses and physicians.  

Over the next several years, the government of Saskatchewan will invest over $60 million in this four-point action plan.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a lot of pressure on the health care system within Saskatchewan and across the country, forcing workers to leave the industry or move elsewhere.  

Those pressures are being seen for residents around the province, as some are facing difficulties finding a family or personal physician due to doctors leaving or the inability to take in new patients.
