Highway 1 reopens following serious crash
UPDATE: Highway 1 has reopened following a serious crash Monday evening.

A section of Highway 1 remains closed Tuesday morning following a serious crash.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday, emergency crews closed down the westbound lanes of Highway 1 from Brandon to Highway 21.
A weather system rolled through southwest Manitoba late Monday evening, leading to treacherous driving conditions.
Motorists driving in the area reported slippery road conditions and encouraged people to stay home.
Fire breaks out in three-storey apartment, no injuries reported
No one was injured following an apartment fire Monday evening.
The blaze broke out around 6:45 p.m. in a three-storey apartment building in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue.
Smoke was filling the hallways of the building when crews arrived. Firefighters quickly located the fire in one of the suites and knocked it down within half an hour.
Residents were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.
The city's Emergency Social Services team responded to the scene to help find temporary housing for displaced residents.
Carney announces plans to boost Canada's military footprint in the Arctic
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Ottawa will expand the Canadian Armed Forces’ presence in the Arctic and turn to Australia's over-the-horizon radar tech to monitor threats from adversaries such as China and Russia.
Carney also pledged $253 million in new funding for Indigenous reconciliation initiatives in the North.
They include $94 million to upgrade power plants in Nunavut and $20 million for a hydroelectricity project to help move northerners off diesel.
Carney says U.S. must stop 'disrespectful' comments before comprehensive talks
Prime Minister Mark Carney says United States President Donald Trump will have to stop his "disrespectful" comments about Canada before the two countries can have comprehensive bilateral conversations about trade and security.
"We've called out those comments. They're disrespectful, they're not helpful, and they need to stop," Carney said in response to a question regarding Trump's repeated remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state.
"They will have to stop before we sit down and have a conversation about our broader partnership with the United States."
Manitoba eyes new rules for motorists around tow trucks, snowplows and cyclists
Manitoba drivers could soon face new rules for driving near snowplows, tow trucks and cyclists.
A bill put before the legislature Monday would require motorists to keep at least 30 metres behind a snowplow or other winter maintenance vehicles while following it on lower-speed roads. On roads with a speed limit of more than 80 kilometres an hour, the minimum distance would be 100 metres.
Missing man last seen near Polo Park safely located
The Winnipeg Police Service says a missing 31-year-old man has been found safe.
Police sent out a missing person alert on Monday afternoon.
The man was last seen on March 16, 2025, in the area of Polo Park Mall in Winnipeg.
The WPS sent out another alert early Monday evening saying the man had been located.
Second set of remains found at Manitoba landfill confirmed as Marcedes Myran
A second set of remains found in a Winnipeg-area landfill have been identified as Marcedes Myran, who died at the hands of a serial killer in 2022, RCMP said Monday.
The news comes after one set of remains found during a search of the Prairie Green landfill was confirmed earlier this month to belong to another victim, Morgan Harris.
Pedestrian seriously injured in Osborne hit-and-run, police seeking driver
Winnipeg police are searching for the driver of a white cargo-style van involved in a hit-and-run early Friday morning that left a 25-year-old woman with serious injuries.
Emergency crews responded to the area of Osborne Street and Mulvey Avenue East at approximately 12:30 a.m. on March 15 after a pedestrian was struck. The woman was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition.
Gene Bowers officially sworn in as Winnipeg’s new chief of police
The Winnipeg Police Service held a swearing-in ceremony Monday morning to welcome Gene Bowers as the 19th chief of police in the city's history.
The Winnipeg Police Board announced Friday, March 7, that Deputy Police Chief Gene Bowers would take over the role previously held by Danny Smyth, who retired from the WPS in September 2024.
Today, he took the official Oath of Allegiance and Office, marking the formal commencement of his duties as Chief.
