Winnipeg Animal Services invites community to help build garden oasis for shelter dogs

Winnipeg Animal Services would like to improve its outdoor space, and they're looking for a helping hand to make it happen.

The plan is to build a sensory garden oasis for the dogs to help keep them calm and relaxed while in the city's care.

The hope is to fill the space with wonderful smells, colours, textures and items that help prevent anxiety most dogs feel while living in a shelter.

Manitoba to close wildfire evacuation centres as some communities return home

Some wildfire evacuees staying at a shelter in northern Manitoba may be moved elsewhere as more communities return home and the government closes temporary evacuation centres.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said roughly 114 people have been staying at the shelter in Thompson for the past three weeks due to a shortage of hotel spaces.

"Folks have been there a really long time, and that was never the intention," Naylor told a wildfire briefing Thursday.

Police, rescuers respond as rock slide hits hikers in Banff; injuries undetermined

Rescue crews, police and paramedics scrambled to a remote region of Banff National Park late Thursday amid reports that a group of hikers were hit by a rock slide, causing possible injuries and deaths.

“The initial report indicated there were multiple hikers and there may be serious injuries and/or fatalities,” RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said in a news release.

Parks Canada, in a statement said, it is responding to a report of "a serious rockfall incident with involvement near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park."

Ottawa shows no signs of limiting MAID after UN panel calls for reversal

Ottawa is giving no sign that it intends to amend existing legislation on medical assistance in dying — something a UN committee called for earlier this spring.

The federal minister responsible for disabilities spoke at a hearing of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last week, about two months after the committee called on Canada to repeal the 2021 law that expanded eligibility for assisted dying to those whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.

Winnipeg police issue warning after rash of fitness centre locker thefts

The Winnipeg Police Service is reminding Winnipeggers who use lockers in the many fitness centres across the city to be extra cautious.

Between April 28 and May 30, Winnipeg police received nearly 20 reports of locker break-ins at fitness facilities across the city.

While the break-ins took place across the city, there was a large number of cases in the Leila North neighbourhood.

In most cases, the victims had their wallets, keys, ID, and cellphones stolen, and in one case, keys stolen from a locker were used to access a vehicle in the parking lot.

Tough night for Goldeyes as Canaries even series

The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-16) evened their series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-19) Wednesday evening, using a nine-run fourth inning and five total home runs to secure a 15-2 win at Blue Cross Park.

The Canaries opened the scoring in the first inning after a dropped fly ball in left field allowed Mike Hart to score. The Goldeyes answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame, as Tanner O’Tremba delivered a two-run double to left-centre, scoring Ramón Bramasco and Roby Enríquez to briefly put Winnipeg ahead 2-1.

Winnipeg students turn welding project into public art on Graham Avenue

A group of students from a Winnipeg high school will soon add a special touch to the downtown landscape.

Eight welding students from Technical Vocational High School spent two months designing and creating 40 bench boxes to be placed along Graham Avenue.

A bus shelter that once occupied space on Graham Avenue will be removed as the city switches to its new Primary Transit Network. This will leave more room for pedestrians to walk, sit, and rest.
