‘An Improvised John Hughes Movie’ delivers heartfelt laughs and ’80s nostalgia

Over 50 people attended the Winnipeg Fringe Festival show, 'An Improvised John Hughes Movie', on Friday at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain.

We enjoyed this improv show so much the first time on Tuesday that we went back for a second time on Friday. The show used the styles and tropes popular in John Hughes' movies.

With a similar structure to Tuesday's show, audience suggestions were incorporated into the show but led to different results.

Thunderstorm risk looms over Manitoba Friday as capping creates unpredictable conditions

A warm and humid air mass will move through the province today, brewing up all the ingredients needed to create severe thunderstorms.

However, something called "capping" is making it hard for meteorologists to predict exactly what will happen.

"The capping is just a layer of warm air above the surface, about 1-2 km up in the sky," said Crawford Luke, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Wildfires continue to devastate northern Manitoba amid worst season in 30 years

Wildfires continue to wreak havoc across northern Manitoba.

A fire entered the town of Leaf Rapids on Wednesday, causing damage to between five and seven buildings, most of which were abandoned, with only one of those being a residence.

Fire crews had to retreat to safety in response to the intense wildfire activity. However, they were able to return within the hour, working through the night to keep the blaze contained.

Across the province, the fire risk is medium to high, with areas to the north of greatest concern.

Tragic crash sparks life-saving blood drive in memory of Manitoba musician and his partner

A blood drive has been organized following the tragic death of Royal Canoe bassist, Brendan Berg and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk.

The pair died in a head-on crash north of Swan River on July 1.

The idea was brought to life by Michalczuk's mother, Donna.

"Olivia received many units of blood after the accident," said Donna in a post on Facebook. "Without the generous blood donations to Canadian Blood Services, we would not have been able to say our last goodbyes before she passed. So….if you think you’d like to do something nice in her honour, please donate."

Sentencing for Freedom Convoy leaders Lich, Barber scheduled for Oct. 7

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, two leaders of the Freedom Convoy protest, are scheduled to be sentenced for mischief on Oct. 7 in an Ottawa courtroom.

In addition to lengthy prison sentences, the Crown wants to seize Barber's truck, which was used in the protest.

A forfeiture hearing on that matter is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said Thursday she wants to rule on the mischief sentence and truck forfeiture at the same time so that she does not deliver "piecemeal" decisions.

One home destroyed after wildfire enters town in northern Manitoba

Ash and embers rained down on the northwestern Manitoba town of Leaf Rapids when an out-of-control wildfire entered the community Wednesday evening resulting in the damage of one home and several abandoned buildings.

Firefighters have been in the community for weeks establishing fire guards, managing vegetation and setting up value protection on critical infrastructure, but "intense fire behaviour" that ramped up over the course of a few hours prompted crews to temporarily leave the town.

"This was a carefully planned and meticulously executed rescue plan," the company said in a statement.
