Air Canada pushing for government intervention as clock ticks on labour talks

Air Canada and business leaders are asking Ottawa to be ready to intervene in labour talks with its pilots as time is running out before a potential shutdown, but so far the government has said the two sides need to work things out. 

Airline spokesman Christophe Hennebelle said Thursday that Air Canada is committed to negotiations, but it faces wage demands from the Air Line Pilots Association that it can't meet. 

"The issue is that we are faced with unreasonable wage demands that ALPA refuses to moderate.”

'Don't be alarmed': Emergency exercise to take place at Winnipeg airport Thursday

The Winnipeg Richardson International Airport will be abuzz with emergency vehicles on Thursday, but it's nothing to be alarmed about.

The Winnipeg Airport Authority is conducting a live emergency exercise, which will see increased emergency activity at the airport, including emergency response personnel, emergency vehicles, and airport equipment on the airfield.

This will not affect the day-to-day operations at the airport, and if the weather or other operational issues arise, the exercise will be postponed. 

Goldeyes lose to RedHawks leading to game three of the West Division Playoffs

The Winnipeg Goldeyes will return to the field at Blue Cross Park tonight for game three of the West Division Playoffs after losing 5-3 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Wednesday evening.  

The winning team will move on to the American Association Final, where they will take on the Kane County Cougars, who took the East Division series against the Chicago Dogs.

The Marathon of Hope started with one man, Terry Fox, but Canadians continue to carry on his legacy.

"Terry Fox has impacted so many Canadians," says Carissa Robb, the Director of Community Development in Manitoba and Saskatchewan with the Terry Fox Foundation. "His attitude is what keeps us going. It's incredible for such a young man, how mature he was, his ethics, determination and perseverance, it's admirable and keeps me, and the hundreds of volunteers going year after year."

PM, senior security officials slated to return to foreign interference inquiry

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of his inner circle are slated to return to a federal inquiry into foreign interference in coming weeks.

A newly published provisional witness list for the next phase of the inquiry's public work indicates senior government bureaucrats and members of national security agencies will also testify.

Trudeau and key government officials took part in the commission's initial hearings earlier this year on allegations of foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.

Electrical fire causes significant damage to family home

No one was injured following a fire Wednesday evening in northwest Winnipeg. 

At around 5:50 p.m., crews responded to a single-family bungalow in the 300 block of Leila Avenue, between Aikins Street and Salter Street. 

When they arrived, smoke was coming from the house. Firefighters quickly fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control about a half hour later. 

Everyone evacuated safely, while crews rescued two cats from the home. 

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction. 

'I'm not going to listen to you': Singh claps back at Poilievre ahead of House return

A battle is heating up between Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh ahead of the return of the House of Commons next week, as the Conservatives challenge the NDP to help them bring down the government.

Singh said Wednesday he won't be taking advice from Poilievre, while sidestepping questions about whether the NDP would vote in favour of a non-confidence motion, as Poilievre challenged him to do.

MBCI teacher puts art on display for free show in St. Boniface ▶️

When he's not teaching high school students science, Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute's Andrew S. Hiebert can be found making art, some of which is on display right now to view free of charge in St. Boniface. 

Hiebert says that his love for art started when he was young, and became a therapy as he got older. "When I was in church, I would be drawing pictures of tractors. I was the school cartoonist and my dream was to become an artist."

'This isn't the end of my journey': Chris Streveler has 3 torn ligaments

Chris Streveler announced that his 2024 season is over after suffering a major knee injury during last weekend's Banjo Bowl.

In an emotional Instagram post, Streveler revealed that he tore three of the four major ligaments in his knee, marking the first time in his career that he's stayed down on the field following an injury.

“I’ve been through a lot of adversity in this game, but through it all I’m reminded that you can only truly control three things—how you show up on a daily basis, how hard you work, and what type of attitude you have,” Streveler wrote.
