Canada Post rejects union's request for binding arbitration to end labour dispute

Canada Post has rejected a request from the union representing about 55,000 of its workers to send their ongoing labour dispute to binding arbitration.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers made the request in a statement Saturday, saying it was inviting Canada Post to a fair, final and binding arbitration process to resolve negotiations that have dragged on for months without producing a new collective agreement. 

Wildfire contained near Flin Flon, Man.; Saskatchewan hamlet ordered to evacuate

Fire crews in northern Manitoba have so far been able to contain an encroaching wildfire that forced thousands from their homes, while more residents in Saskatchewan have been told to leave due to a fast-moving blaze. 

The Saskatchewan government has issued an evacuation alert for the dozens of residents that live in the small northern hamlet of Timber Bay.

Residents have been asked to make their way to a hotel in Regina.

While the federal government and cities across Canada are making strides on expanding the housing supply, the provinces still need to get serious about building quality homes, a new report released Thursday argues.

No province earned a grade higher than C+ in the report assembled by the Task Force for Housing and Climate, a non-governmental body that was struck in 2023 with backing from the philanthropic Clean Economy Fund.

The task force's "report card" evaluated governments based on their policies for building homes quickly and sustainably.

Manitoba wildfire emergency worsens with high winds, more evacuations

Wildfires continue to rage across Manitoba, with 25 fires currently active and thousands displaced as officials respond to dangerous conditions across the province, according to the provincial government's latest fire bulletin Saturday evening.

The provincial state of emergency remains in effect, and authorities warn that human activity and hot, dry weather are fuelling extreme fire behaviour.

Student-led festival celebrates Asian Heritage Month

Attendees gathered to celebrate Asian Heritage Month at a festival held by Asia Connect MB on the University of Manitoba campus.

Asia Connect MB, a student-led festival, had several student groups, vendors, and food trucks on-site participating in the festivities. Student groups such as the University of Manitoba Filipino Student Association, UMFSA, were involved in organizing the festival.

As well, there were cultural performances such as dance and music for people to enjoy.

Man dies after police shooting in St. James

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was fatally shot by Winnipeg Police during a confrontation in the St. James area Friday evening.

According to a Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) news release, officers were called to the 200 block of Ferry Road around 6:11 p.m. on May 30 following reports of a suspicious person. The call indicated that an unknown man was in a rear lane, covered in blood and possibly trying to break into homes.

Hundreds ride through Winnipeg to support prostate cancer research

Hundreds of motorcycles revved their engines down Portage Avenue Saturday morning to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research.

It was all part of the 17th annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad, an event that draws in hundreds of participants each year.

This year's ride started at Earls Polo Park and continued west on Portage Avenue to Assiniboia Downs, then on to Selkirk, Gimli and back for the wind-up event at Canad Inns Windsor Park.
