Final day of advance voting for federal election

Thousands of Cochrane area voters have cast their ballots in the advance poll that closes at 9 p.m. tonight (Sep. 13).

It's the fourth and final day of advance polls. After that voters will have to wait until election day, Sept. 20, to head to the polls.

The lineups at the former location of Northstar Ford, 340 Railway St. W. are reported to have been moving steadily.

In an effort to make life better, and more affordable for families across Northern Ontario the NDP has unveiled their Northern Ontario platform.

This platform will create and support good jobs, protect communities from the effects of climate change, and put reconciliation into action.

OTTAWA — Federal party leaders jousted over climate change, health care, foreign policy, the economy and Indigenous reconciliation during Thursday’s English-language debate — their last, best chance to sway voters before the Sept. 20 election.

But the format of the debate may have left many viewers unsatisfied.

The five leaders frequently talked over one another. Leaders on the receiving end of accusations or loaded questions from rivals were often given no chance to respond.

Advance polls for federal election now open

With the federal election just over a week from now, advance polls are open for those unable to vote on election day September 20, 2021. The advance polling station in Kenora is Seven Generations Education Institute. In Dryden at the Best Western Plus Dryden Hotel & Conference Centre and in Sioux Lookout at the Royal Canadian Legion on Front Street. These locations will be in operation until Monday, September 13, 2021. Advance polls are open from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

Candidates talk climate change at KDCC debate

The five candidates vying for your vote presented their party's platforms and debated a number of topics at last night's Kenora and District Chamber of Commerce All Candidate Debate.

The crowd at Seven Generations Education Institute heard the candidate's debate on five topics including the climate crisis.

"Climate change is most certainly real and is a serious threat to our region and our country," said Incumbent Conservative candidate Eric Melillo.

Residents react to All Candidates Debate

In light of the fast-approaching 2021 federal election, the Seven Generations Auditorium played host to the All Candidates Debate last night.

The event hosted by the Kenora and District Chamber of Commerce allowed the five Kenora riding candidates to show the public what each of them is fighting for.

Each candidate responded to questions, endorsed their political platform, and provided solutions to hard-pressed issues the region faces.

Elections Canada is hiring local residents

With the September 20th federal election just around the corner, Elections Canada is looking for 400 local people to fill poll worker positions.  

Positions include:  

Deputy Returning officer (polling day) 
Deputy Returning officer  (advance polling days) 
Information Officer
Registration Officer
Central Poll Supervisor 

Paid training will be provided with an average pay scale starting at $17.72 to $23.44/hour.  

Defacing of election signs runs rampant

The defacing of candidate signs for the federal election is running rampant in Cochrane.

While it's unclear if the vandals are targeting any particular candidate, those of Nadine Wellwood of the People's Party of Canada (PPC) were heavily hit overnight at the traffic circle by the SLS Family Sports Centre. Many were spray-painted with vulgarities, most too graphic to publish.

Liberal candidate David Gamble says he's also being targeted by vandals.

Advanced polls for federal election open Friday

Advance polls for the Sept. 20 federal election will be open from Friday, Sept. 10 until Monday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the former Northstar Ford location at 340 Railway St. W.

There are nine candidates for the Banff-Airdrie riding, in which Cochrane is located. They are Aidan Blum, Green Party; Tariq Elnaga, Maverick Party; David Gamble, Liberal Party; Caroline O'Driscoll, independent; Blake Richards, Conservatives; Derek Sloan, independent, Ron Voss, independent; Nadine Wellwood, People's Party; and Sarah Zagoda, NDP.
