Alert issued for dangerous person on University of Manitoba campus

There is a large police presence at the University of Manitoba Tuesday morning as Winnipeg police search for an alleged armed man.

The Winnipeg Police Service made a post on social media at around 7:30 a.m. saying they received reports of a male armed with a knife at the Allen Building, which is located at 30 Sifton Road, at the U of M Campus.

Province halfway to goal of hiring 1,000 net new health-care workers

The province says it is halfway to its goal of hiring 1,000 net new health-care workers. 

“Manitobans told us clearly they want more nurses, doctors and health-care professionals working in our province,” said Wab Kinew at a press conference at Grace Hospital on Thursday. “We made an ambitious promise to add 1,000 net new people into our system and today we’re proud to say we’re more than halfway to that goal."

873 net new health-care workers have been added between April 1 and Aug. 31 including, 116 physicians, 304 nurses, 290 health-care aides and 87 allied health. 

Manitoba celebrates older adults with the 2024 Manitoba Health Aging Awards

The province has found a way to recognize seniors who have shown outstanding voluntary contributions to improve the health and well-being of people living in Manitoba.

On Monday, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced that nominations are open for the Manitoba Healthy Aging Awards.

One man dead following officer-involved shooting in Niverville, RCMP and Winnipeg police on scene

There is a large police presence in Niverville following an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.

RCMP say one man is dead, one female is in custody and one male fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Manitoba RCMP and Winnipeg police have been at the scene on Drovers Run in Niverville since 3 a.m. As a result, the street has been shut down and is expected to remain closed for most of the day.

Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to avoid the area.

Province freezing park and camping fees for 2024

The province announced Wednesday it is freezing provincial park pass and camping fees. 

In 2020, the Manitoba government announced it was signing a contract with an American-based service provider to administer the park pass program. The fees associated with the contract were scheduled to increase this year. However, the province has put aside $46 million in its 2024 budget to allow them to freeze fees.

The cyber incident first came to the attention of the school on March 24, and ever since then, the University has been working around the clock to determine its impact.

Manitoba government making it easier for former nurses to return to work

The province is making it easier for former nurses to return to work in Manitoba.

The Manitoba government is working with three nursing regulatory colleges to create a streamlined path that will ensure former licensed practical nurses, registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses who worked in Manitoba’s health-care system in the last five years and were in good standing with their regulatory college have a faster, more flexible pathway to return to their profession.

Province unveils updated portrait of Louis Riel recognizing him as first premier of Manitoba

It was a special day at the Manitoba Legislature on Monday as the province declared Louis Riel as the first premier of Manitoba. 

Premier Wab Kinew, the minister responsible for intergovernmental affairs and Indigenous reconciliation, and Manitoba Métis Federation President David Chartrand unveiled a new portrait designation yesterday.
