Orpheum Theatre gets a $25,000 boost from Golden West -- just in time for reopening▶️

"Oh my gosh. You're not kidding me? This isn't an April Fool's joke?"

That was Jocelyn Dougherty's reaction when we called to tell her that her business, the Orpheum Theatre in Estevan, won a $25,000 advertising package from Golden West and Homefield just for signing up for our Accelerate 2025 contest earlier in March. 

Rain and cold set to ruin warm summer air this weekend

The southeast is set to enjoy a day of summer-like temperatures, but this weekend we'll see quite the switch as a cold and wet system strolls by. A Colorado low is set to hit the area and bring rain and a drop in temperatures, beginning partway through the weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologist Stephen Berg talks about the system expected to hit us soon.

"There's a bit of a Colorado low that's coming up from the southwest towards Minnesota and the southeastern part of North Dakota. That brings some precipitation for the southeastern part of Saskatchewan."

Tim Horton's Smile Cookie fundraiser returns with EPYC and Family Centre collaboration

This year’s Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign will support two local organizations focused on youth: the Estevan Early Years Family Resource Centre and the Estevan Public Youth Centre (EPYC). After placing seventh in national cookie sales last year and raising $46,832.50, the Estevan campaign is back with a new goal — to benefit children and teens across the community.

DBA looks ahead as downtown construction picks up again

The Downtown Business Association (DBA) is optimistic about the restart of Estevan’s downtown construction project, pointing to the improvements it will bring to the area.

The DBA met with the City of Estevan, ASL Paving and Associated Engineering at the beginning of April to review the project’s progress and timelines.

“They listened to our concerns and questions, and we were really pleased with the feedback we got,” said Laurel Buck, chairperson of the DBA and owner of A&A Jewellery.

RCMP sends out list of 11 currently wanted individuals for April update

The Saskatchewan RCMP are warning people in the province with a list of 11 currently wanted individuals, some of whom may be in the southeast.

They released that list earlier today as a way to remind people of what to do if they see a wanted individual.

From the March list, three of those individuals were arrested by the RCMP over the month.

The names on the list that may be present in the southeast include:

Carney pitches crime policy, tougher laws on harassment at places of worship

Liberal Leader Mark Carney said Thursday he would pass tougher laws to stop people from being harassed at their places of worship, part of a suite of crime and justice measures he unveiled at a campaign stop in southern Ontario.

The promise comes after more than a year of reports of rising hate targeting Jews and Muslims in Canada following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel in 2023, and the war in Gaza.

Hodson takes the helm as Chair of Manitoba Crop Alliance

The Manitoba Crop Alliance has a new leader at the helm as Jonathan Hodson recently stepped into the role of board chair. Farming near Lenore in western Manitoba, Hodson brings years of experience to the position and a deep understanding of the organization, having been involved since its formation five years ago. 

Hodson has served in various roles over the years, including most recently as vice-chair. Before the formation of the MCA, he was a director with the Manitoba Corn Growers Association, one of the organizations that merged to form the alliance. 

Estevan Humane Society receives $5,500 donation from B&T Gun Show

The Estevan Humane Society was thrilled to receive a generous $5,500 donation from the B&T Gun Show this week. The funds will go a long way in supporting the shelter’s ongoing operations.

“We didn’t know how much we would receive until the actual event,” said Tayja Lakusta, the President of the Board of Directors for the Estevan Humane Society. “It’s based on the turnout and how much the event raises, so when we got the cheque, we were pretty surprised and excited to be the beneficiaries of this donation.”

Solar panel project showcases updates to the community at second open house

Estevan got to see an update on a new development taking place outside of town, as the Iyuhána Solar Project is being developed by Greenwood Sustainable Infrastructure in partnership with SaskPower and Ocean Man First Nation.

The project will be set up southwest of Estevan, providing a projected 100 megawatts, enough to power around 25,000 homes. The open house was the second held by Greenwood as the project has been moving forward.
