Estevan police investigate stolen truck, drug trafficking, and multiple other incidents

STOLEN VEHICLE UPDATE: 

The yellow Ford F-350 reported stolen early this morning has been located, and one suspect is in custody.  EPS thanks everyone who reported sightings which led to the vehicle's recovery.

Estevan police laid multiple charges and launched several investigations following a series of incidents in the city, including a drug trafficking arrest, thefts, vandalism, and a suspected case of identity fraud.

Carr praises community effort on MRI, outlines rural health strategy

Estevan MLA Lori Carr says bringing healthcare services to rural Saskatchewan is a challenge, but one she is fully committed to tackling. Now three months into her role as minister of mental health and addictions, seniors, and rural and remote health, she said she is still adjusting to the position.

“It feels like I’ve been in the portfolio forever, but honestly, it’s only been three months,” Carr said. “So the transition is still truly taking place. It’s a lot to learn.”

'Grains of Saskatchewan': A new hands-on learning experience

Last month, Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) unveiled a brand-new ‘Grains of Saskatchewan’ interactive display. A new interactive display that will allow a more hands-on learning experience surrounding agriculture and crops grown in Saskatchewan. Sara Shymko, executive director of Agriculture in the Classroom, explains how hands-on learning can benefit when teaching about agriculture.  

Big Six senior teams preparing for second series of playoffs to launch this weekend

This weekend the second round of the Big Six Hockey League Playoffs will see its second series kicking off with the Carlyle Cougars and Moosomin Rangers taking centre stage.

The Cougars took three straight wins over the Midale Mustangs in the first round to get here, while the Moosomin Rangers ran into a bit more trouble with a 3-1 series victory against the Oxbow Huskies.

SECPSD board looks at major capital project for ECS and new elementary school in Estevan

The Southeast Cornerstone Public School Divison (SECPSD) is taking a look at a few capital projects ahead of them, including one that'll focus on the Estevan Comprehensive School.

While they say that a few tentative movements have been taken in the past, significant improvements need to be made soon to keep the facility relevant and operational.

That comes with a cost, said Andy Dobson, manager of facilities and transportation for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division.

Now that we've made it through this incredible cold spell, it's time to have some fun. A local band from the southeast Moxie Blue will be performing at the Estevan Legion Saturday March 1st. Refreshments at 5pm, roast beef supper at 6 and the show starts at 7:30 and a 50/50 as well.

Estevan community thrilled with Canada's 4-Nations Face-Off win

Canada was abuzz last night with a 3-2 overtime win against the US in the 4 Nations face-off, with Estevan fans very tuned in.

The game saw Canada come away from the match with a gold medal, after losing against the US in the open round earlier in February 3-1.

The game-winning goal, with Connor McDavid getting the puck in after receiving a pass right in front of the net, had Carlyle Cougars coach Brad Pierson shocked.

Calls for service six times higher during cold snap compared to year prior: CAA

Much like the people operating them, vehicles are none too pleased when temperatures drop (and linger) well into the -30°C range like they did during the province's most recent cold snap.

There are plenty of things that go wrong when the deep freeze hits, and according to CAA Saskatchewan there was quite a demand for their services in the Moose Jaw area during the record breaking cold. 

Canada triumphs over US in intense 4 Nations Face-Off final with tensions high

Canada defeated its archrival the United States 3-2 in overtime in the 4 Nations Face-Off final on Thursday night in what was an emotionally-charged affair for players and fans alike.

The rematch between the two sides was intense, although it did not consist of three fights in the opening nine seconds, as the preliminary round game in Montreal did last Saturday, a 3-1 win for the Americans.

Connor McDavid scored the game winner, while Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett scored in regulation for Canada. Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson replied for the U.S.
