Local Cystic Fibrosis advocate wins national award for work combatting disease

A local contributor to the fight against Cystic Fibrosis received an award for their work in helping with awareness and fundraising for efforts against the disease.

Kasey McIntyre was awarded the Mila Mulroney Award for Western Canada, which goes to a person who helps to raise awareness and has seen the impacts of CF in their own family.

RCMP releases details on four killed in incident on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation

The Saskatchewan Coroner's Service and Saskatchewan RCMP are releasing the names of the people who died due to a homicide on February 4th, in collaboration with the family members of the deceased.

The RCMP are releasing the names to help with the investigation and they share their condolences and are offering support to the families.

The deceased victims are identified as:

Southeast College gives out bursary awards to help students through school year

The Southeast College has given out some bursary awards to students, giving them some help with finances during the school year.

Some recent award presentations took place in Weyburn on February 10, Estevan on February 11, and Whitewood on February 12.

Vice President of Communication and Strategic Enrollment Sheena Onrait says they're changing up how awards are given out to better help students.

Flu cases continue to rise across Canada, public health agency data show

Flu cases are continuing to rise across the country, public health data show, with Quebec, B.C. and the territories particularly hard hit as vulnerable patients seek help at hospitals. 

The Public Health Agency of Canada's website says 24 per cent of cases tested positive for influenza during the week ending Feb. 8 — up from the already-high 21 per cent the week before.   

Estevan sets record for development permits, business licenses in 2024

The City of Estevan saw record numbers in development permits and business licences in 2024, marking significant progress in land development and economic growth, according to a report presented to the city council.

Richard Neufeld, the city’s land development services manager, provided an overview of the department’s annual report, highlighting key trends and achievements.

One of the standout figures was a record 92 development permits issued in 2024, the highest since 2017. Neufeld noted optimism for even greater numbers in the future.

Senators say Canada's flag is a symbol of national pride, growth

A group of Canadian senators is sharing views on the country's flag, with some calling it a symbol of pride and togetherness, and others saying it represents Canada's growth.

The report released this week is the result of an "inquiry" on the meaning of the Canadian flag launched by Sen. Andrew Cardozo a year ago. 

Canada is marking the 60th anniversary of the national flag, adopted in 1965 with its iconic red Maple Leaf under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Cardozo says it's important that Canadians are proud of the flag.

RCMP provide update on Highway 39 collision near Midale

The RCMP are providing an update on a collision which closed down a section of Highway 39 yesterday.

On February 13, at around 1:15 p.m., Estevan RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 39, approximately six kilometres southeast of Midale.

RCMP responded with assistance from the local fire, EMS and STARS. Estevan and Weyburn RCMP Collision Reconstruction also attended.
