Manitoba Canola Growers Association releases results from trial types

Manitoba Canola Growers Association has released a report from its Canola On-Farm Research program.

The program started in 2022 with three trial types across 12 trial locations. It has since grown to include five trial types and 37 testing locations across Manitoba. The program aims to collaborate with farmers, agronomists, and researchers to provide the most relevant and valuable information to its members.

Kingston Midstream supports Souris Valley Museum with $10K for locomotive revamp

Souris Valley Museum has received a $10,000 donation from Kingston Midstream to help restore its historic ALCO locomotive, an important piece of the region’s mining heritage.

Melanie Memory, director of the Souris Valley Museum, said the fundraising efforts for the locomotive have been ongoing.

To date, the museum has raised $22,917, which includes the $10,000 donation from Kingston Midstream and $12,000 from its own funds. "We raised $12,300, and as a board, we decided to match that amount from our savings," Memory explained.

A quick post to social media proved to be the solution for hockey player Kayleigh Churko, who was able to recover her missing goalie equipment after it was blown off her truck during a windy drive home.

Kaleigh Churko was driving home after a hockey practice when her goalie bag, placed in the raised truck bed, was blown out by strong winds. One of the rails of the truck bed was turned the wrong way, which contributed to the mishap.

“When I got home—about an hour and a half later—I realized the bag was gone,” Churko said.

Estevan Lacrosse Club sets sights on growth, aiming to expand age divisions

With Saskatchewan Rush games now set to air on Golden West Radio, excitement around lacrosse is building across the province. Locally, the Estevan Lacrosse Club is eager to capitalize on this momentum by growing participation in the sport.

“We are a looking to expand our numbers into a little bit older age groups. Last year we had 19 U7 players, and around 12 U9 players. We want to get everything from U11, U13, U15 and hopefully get back into U18 and eventually back into Junior League too,” said Lucas Smythe, vice-president of the Estevan Lacrosse Club.

The 2024 calendar year was an interesting one within agriculture for farmers in the southeast, and in Saskatchewan as a whole. Multiple drought years previously had brought uncertainty heading into the 2024 winter regarding moisture levels for spring as snow was not abundant. Thankfully, some choice snow and rain events in late Winter and into Spring helped shape optimism for the growing year.

Southeast preparing for rough week with heavy winds and blowing snow hitting the area

Conditions are fairly bad in the southeast for drivers with visibility heavily reduced this morning.

Currently, the Highway Hotline has issued Partly Covered and Covered conditions for the southeast, though the southwest has that even worse.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins says that light snowfall and heavy winds resulted in the current situation.

CAF updates entry medical standards to aid recruitment efforts

The Canadian Armed Forces is no longer automatically disqualifying applicants with certain medical conditions such as allergies and ADHD, as it works to improve its numbers and grow the size of Canada's military. 

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan said the four medical conditions that will now be evaluated when people apply are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, asthma and allergies.

Carignan said previously any applicants that arrived with an allergy were immediately disqualified.

Province highlights Animal Health and Biosecurity Program for farmers looking for help affording crucial upgrades

The government of Saskatchewan is highlighting their Animal Health and Biosecurity Program to help farmers know what options are available to them.

The program covers a number of livestock, including beef cattle, bison, cervids, dairy, honey and leaf-cutter bees, as well as poultry, sheep, goats and swine.

Agriculture Program Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture Jason Falk says the goal is to keep those animals healthy.

Drew Kocur named interim head coach and GM of the Estevan Bruins

The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins have announced that Drew Kocur will serve as interim head coach and general manager for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Kocur, who joined as an assistant coach in 2023, previously led the Pilot Butte Storm to a Junior B Provincial Championship and earned Coach of the Year honours in the 2022-23 season.

The Bruins are currently fourth in the SJHL’s Viterra Division, holding a 12-18-4 record and sitting nine points out of a playoff spot, with 22 games remaining.
