Premiers urge unity in face of U.S. tariff threats, Alberta demands energy exemption
The country's premiers emerged from a key meeting about Canada-U.S. relations in Ottawa on Wednesday with a message of unity and a pledge to stand together, with one exception: Alberta's Danielle Smith, who said she cannot support the federal government's plan if energy export tariffs could be a part of it.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who chaired the first ministers' meeting, said it was "highly productive."
"We have a shared sense of purpose, a shared sense of understanding, and a commitment to stand together on a united path forward," he said.
Saskatchewan Marshals Service interviewing Mounties for positions before launching
Saskatchewan's new provincial police force has begun interviewing Mounties as it prepares to launch this year, a move critics say highlights concerns of job poaching.
Chief Marshal Robert Cameron of the Saskatchewan Marshals Service says the force has received interest from across the country for its positions, including officers from Saskatchewan.
A spokesperson with the marshals later confirmed it's been interviewing Saskatchewan Mounties for positions.

The city is advising people to watch the roads Thursday morning as a house will be moved along a major street.
That is set to commence at 9 a.m. on January 16th, with no end time given.
The route will begin on Kensington Avenue, just before Escana Street, moving south towards the intersection from 4th Street.
RCMP advise on roadside emergencies: Stay put, don't panic
Temperatures are expected to warm up to plus one before the end of the week presenting the possibility of ice and slush. Slippery and uneven road conditions can often lead to vehicles becoming stuck on the side of the road or in the ditch. Sergeant Warner Ignatiuk is the detachment Commander for the Weyburn, Radville, Fillmore RCMP. He says the key thing to know in these situations, is to stay with the vehicle.

2025 is a big year for Southeast College as it will ring in its 50th anniversary of bringing education to the Southeast.
The organization joined the Saskatchewan Regional College System 50 years ago, with the college now celebrating the date with events and a new scholarship.
SERT lays out 2024 performance with arrest warrants executed and drugs seized
The Saskatchewan RCMP's Saskatchewan Enforcement Response Teams (SERT) posted it's look back at 2024 and how the unit performed over the year.
SERT helps to apprehend individuals with active warrants, particularly those who are in criminal groups and are violent, prolific offenders.
Made up of 108 RCMP officers and 31 civilian support staff, with different teams located in 10 Saskatchewan communities, SERT often deploys to surrounding areas.
2024 building permits reflect shift towards smaller, varied construction projects
At the latest council meeting, the December building permit report was approved, providing a snapshot of construction activity in the region. The report highlighted a range of permit categories, and the financial values associated with them.
In December alone, one miscellaneous building permit was issued, valued at $850,000. When looking at the entire year, a total of 42 building permits were issued in 2024, marking a slight decrease from the 45 permits issued in 2023. The total value of permits for 2024 reached $10,818,257.
