A year of giving, a future of health: Estevan’s community unites to bring MRI to life

In a remarkable year of giving, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation is on track to bring an MRI machine to Estevan's hospital, thanks to nearly $4.5 million raised for the initiative. With strong community backing, including heartfelt donations inspired by local heroes like JC Ross, the foundation is pushing forward with its mission to enhance healthcare services for the region.

The foundation's MRI project, explained Lori Gervais, began in April and aims to bring MRI services to the hospital, with Elaine Walkom’s initial contribution starting things off.

Two charged in connection to death on White Bear First Nation

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit has charged two men in connection with a suspicious death on White Bear First Nation earlier this week.  

The RCMP have charged 22-year-old Jeremy Whitebear with second-degree murder and 26-year-old Dwayne Maxie with manslaughter in connection with the death of 33-year-old Talon Lonethunder. Lonethunder was found deceased in a home on White Bear First Nation early Tuesday morning.  

AAA Estevan Bears maul Yorkton in 11-2 blowout

The U18 AAA Estevan Bears skated to a commanding 11-2 victory over the Yorkton Maulers on Wednesday night, dominating in all areas of the game.

After the first period, the Bears led 1-0, with Roan Burgess scoring the opening goal. Head coach Ryan Pilon admitted the team wasn’t at their best early on.

“We didn’t really like our first period too much,” Pilon said. “We ended up having a one-nothing lead up to the first period, and we weren’t clean, we weren’t sharp, and we weren’t initiating as much as we needed to be.”

Downtown businesses getting ready for hectic holiday season

With the holidays nearly here local businesses are gearing up for what's likely to be a busy holiday season.

That's been complicated by a number of factors, including recent inflationary pressures and a federal GST tax relief holiday.

Road safety recognized: Estevan Police receive MADD Van de Vorst Awards

Members of the Estevan Police Service were recognized last night with the Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Van de Vorst Awards, which honour Saskatchewan police officers for their efforts to combat impaired driving.

The awards are given to officers who charge between 8 and 16 impaired drivers (Silver Coin), 17 to 39 (Gold Coin), or 40 or more (Platinum Coin).

Downtown Business Association planning events to get people onto 4th Street

Estevan's Downtown Business Association is busy as they're hosting a couple of events over the next couple of weeks to get people into the downtown to see what's there.

Tonight's event is the Moonlight Madness, being held from 4-9 p.m. in the downtown area.

City of Estevan details plans for 4th Street work into 2025

The City of Estevan has announced how work will continue on 4th Street after crews opened up the street just a few weeks ago.

Currently, the 1100 block has partially completed sidewalks, with other sidewalks consisting of temporary surfaces or the preexisting sidewalks, with the work set to be completed in 2025.

Across the street, light installation will begin in the next few weeks and continue through December and January.

Estevan leads the way as Crown Oil and Gas sale brings in over $11 Million

Saskatchewan’s latest Crown oil and natural gas public offering raised $11,392,520.38, with the Estevan area generating the most revenue.

The sale, held Dec. 3, saw 51 of 56 parcels receive acceptable bids, covering 13,561.384 hectares. Bidding in the Estevan area brought in $8,088,540.01 for 29 leases totalling 3,412.246 hectares.

In the Kindersley area, six leases and four exploration licences covering 7,613.867 hectares generated $2,449,481.81.

November averages out in temperature after warm first half and chilly second

November was a mild month for many in the southeast, with temperatures swinging from a warm fall to a frosty winter fairly quickly.
