Estevan Chamber of Commerce excited to work with new council

With a new council having their first meeting earlier this week, other organizations around the city are getting used to a shakeup in Estevan's management.

That includes the Estevan Chamber of Commerce, which has an interest in keeping an eye on what the city is doing for businesses.

Executive Director Merissa Scarlett says that she's optimistic about the makeup of the new city council.

Canada Poultry Code of Canada entering first stages of change by NFACC

Canada could see a new update to how it manages poultry as farm organizations manage the Poultry Code of Practice.

That code, managed by the National Farm Animal Care Council, relates to poultry and egg producers in Canada in regards to best practices and policies.

Jackie Wepruk, the division director for the NFACC, says it's a wide-ranging code important for the industry.

With the federal government preparing to remove GST on some items ahead of Christmas, businesses are preparing and figuring out how their businesses might be affected.

The GST Tax Relief will encompass a number of items, ranging from children's clothes, books, alcohol, and more from December 14 to February 15, 2025.

Mermaids make waves and memories in Yorkton last weekend

The Estevan Mermaids had a weekend to remember in Yorkton, where 19 athletes not only competed in the Marnie Eistetter Figures Competition and participated in a development camp but also celebrated big wins at the Saskatchewan Artistic Swimming Awards Banquet, marking a strong start to their season.

Head coach Amber Mantei praised the athletes for their hard work. "Many exceeded their goals," Mantei said. "It was exciting to see the younger swimmers tackle their first competition, despite the nerves of performing solo movements in front of judges."

Carievale kids get Christmas treats from RCMP, fire department during annual tree lighting

Locals from Carievale were able to get a taste of Christmas as the village held its annual Christmas Tree Lighting last week.

On Thursday, locals gathered to celebrate the lighting, joined by the Argyle Fire Department and Carievale RCMP.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye and celebrate the wonderful life of our beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma and great grandma Mary Lou Audet. Mary Lou passed away with her family by her side, at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home in Estevan, Sask. on November 23, 2024, at the age of 88, seventeen days before her 89th birthday.

MADD urges Estevan to drive sober this holiday season

As the holiday season approaches, the message from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is clear: stay safe and drive sober. Connie Hagel, a community leader for MADD and a member of the organization’s national board, emphasized the importance of planning ahead when celebrating during the holidays.

"There's no reason that they should [drive impaired]," Hagel said. "With our day and age with Uber, taxis, the nice weather that we've had, there are other methods to get home. If you know you're going to go out for a Christmas party or to celebrate, plan ahead."
