The Estevan Legion's poppy campaign is set to begin Friday, with the money raised going to support local veterans.

With the annual fundraising effort again starting up, Estevan Legion member and veteran Craig Bird talks about what that money does for local veterans.

If you are in the mood for some spooktacular fun this weekend, the Estevan and area has a variety of events for for ghosts and ghouls of all ages.   

Friday  

Trail of Terror 6:30 – 8:30 pm, at Rotary Hall/ Preddy Trails at Woodlawn. 

Brian Johnson, a former Estevan city councillor, is running in the upcoming municipal election, aiming to return to local politics with a focus on utilizing his 16 years of experience to benefit the community.

“I know that I can be of good help to the city of Estevan, the citizens, and the surrounding communities,” said Johnson, who believes his time away from council has given him a fresh perspective. He acknowledged that while the city has moved forward with important projects, there is still much to be done.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has no intention of stepping down as the leader of the Liberal party by next week. 

A letter signed by two dozen Liberal MPs asking Trudeau to step down was presented to the prime minister Wednesday at a tense caucus meeting in Ottawa.

The letter asked for him to let the caucus know by Oct. 28 what he decides to do.

Trudeau told MPs he would reflect on what was said, but when asked today if he would stay on as prime minister after that date he answered a definitive "yes." 

BRICKERY: A Gallery of LEGO Creations returns to the Estevan Leisure Centre this weekend, showcasing an impressive array of LEGO masterpieces built by members of the Saskatchewan LEGO Users Group (S.L.U.G.). Now in its seventh year, the event promises to deliver fun for LEGO enthusiasts of all ages.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 26, at the Senior Centre, just down the hall from the Estevan Public Library. Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the gallery is free for all to attend.

The Big Six Hockey League is getting ready to hit the ice as the first game of the season kicks off this week.

The Canrduff Red Devils will be hitting the road to face off against the Midale Mustangs, with the puck dropping at 8 p.m.

That game on Friday will be the first of a hopefully great season, with League President Craig Barber saying teams are preparing for the start of the season.

Estevan police are investigating multiple incidents from the weekend, including a hit-and-run, the arrest of an impaired driver, and the seizure of firearms following a well-being check.

On Oct. 21, a hit-and-run occurred in the parking lot of a grocery store in north Estevan, causing extensive damage. The matter remains under investigation.

Police attended two separate areas regarding suspicious persons in the vicinity, but neither individual was located.

As the winter season rolls around, so does cold and flu season.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is encouraging southwest residents, families, and everyone else to stay safe, take the necessary precautions, and receive their vaccines.

Dr. David Torr, medical health officer with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Area Department Lead for the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, noted that infections and viruses like the flu spread much easier in colder temperatures.

The Estevan Elecs captured the annual Co-op Challenge Wednesday night at Weyburn Comprehensive School in a night full of intense volleyball action, and some off-court drama.  

The WCS Eagles came into the night trailing in the four-game challenge, with Estevan having taken both matches in the first leg, played in Estevan on October 9th. This would mean the Eagles needed a strong performance in both of the games in front of their home crowd.  

We're now a couple of days into the provincial election's advance polls and electorates are coming out to voting locations in droves. 

Elections Saskatchewan announced yesterday that 60,745 voters throughout the province have cast their ballots on Tuesday. This is about 20,000 more than in 2020's general election, which yielded 41,458 voters on the first day. 

Tim Kydd, senior director for outreach and communications for the organization, noted in a statement that this doesn't include votes cast in personal care facilities.
