Cannington MLA ready to serve southeast and province as Minister of Agriculture

The Saskatchewan Party has announced their cabinet for their upcoming term, with the southeast seeing some new representation.

Daryl Harrison, the MLA for the Cannington constituency, will be serving as the Minister of Agriculture.

Harrison says that he's honoured to serve, bringing with him first-hand experience in the industry.

Federal government moves to end port work stoppages, orders binding arbitration

Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon intervened Tuesday to end work stoppages at ports in both British Columbia and Montreal, directing the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order the resumption of all operations and move the talks to binding arbitration.

But labour experts and other groups say the minister's decision to intervene in the dispute sets a dangerous precedent that undermines workers' rights. 

Estevan Police Service notes occurrences over Remembrance Day weekend

The Estevan Police Service responded to a number of calls over the Remembrance Day weekend, with a few notable calls coming through.

On the 8th, police received a report of an individual receiving threats from another person, which is still under investigation.

Another report came in that afternoon of a suspicious person in a south-end mobile home park. Members attended and located the male described, telling him to move along once they found he had no reason to be there.

Old hunting and fishing gear turned into animal habitat through wildlife federation initiative

One man’s trash could be an animal’s treasure this fall as the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is turning old hunting and fishing equipment into habitat land.

Director of Habitat Lands Darren Newberry says every year, the SWF collects old hunting blinds, clothing, fishing tackles, rods, reels and hooks, auctions them off, and uses the funds to purchase habitat lands for wildlife.

Election Day looms for southeast Rural Municipalities: Key races and acclaimed positions

Voters in towns, cities and rural municipalities (RMs) across the southeast will head to the polls tomorrow, Nov. 13, with key elections throughout the region.

While many seats were filled by acclimation, the following RMs are headed to the polls:

In the RM of Argyle No. 1, voters will choose between George Howden and John Ryckman for reeve. Larry Redpath for Division 1, Krystyn Gillies for Division 3, and Sheldon Jeffrey for Division 5 were acclaimed as councillors.

Cindy Spyromilios 1956 - 2024

Cindy Ann Spyromilios (Zieglgansberger) passed away in Athens, Greece on August 11, 2024 after a long fought battle with cancer. The Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Services in Estevan, with Shirley Petterson officiating. Interment will follow in the Bienfait Cemetery. Our mom loved to help animals, especially cats. In lieu of cards or flowers, remembrances can be made through contributions to the Estevan Humane Society in her name.

Coutts, Alexander "Gordon"

Gordon passed away at Newhope Pioneer Lodge, Stoughton, Sask. on November 8, 2024 at the age of 97. 
 
In honour of Gordon, a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Stoughton, with Monica Dayman officiating. A luncheon will follow, after which the interment will take place at the Stoughton Town Cemetery. 
 

Intersection of 4th Street and 13th Avenue opened

The city of Estevan has mostly opened the intersection of 13th Avenue following months of construction work.

The streets to the north, south, and west of the intersection are open, with the east side currently still blocked off.

As well, the intersection is currently a three-way stop, with no traffic lights set up at the corner.

We'll have any more updates on the intersection and all of the 4th Street revitalization project as that becomes available.

Elections Saskatchewan announces final results of provincial election

The final results of Saskatchewan's provincial election were counted out on Saturday, with Elections Saskatchewan finishing their work.

The total count stands as the Saskatchewan party received 244,037 votes and 34 seats during the election.

The Saskatchewan NDP meanwhile ended the count with 188,373 votes and 27 seats, improving from their previous total but not by enough to secure government.

For the parties that didn't see any seats, the Buffalo Party received 3,267, The Saskatchewan United Party got 18,023, and the Green Party got 7,957.
