The latest job numbers from Statistics Canada, released this morning, reveal a mixed picture for the Weyburn and Estevan region. While employment decreased in October, the unemployment rate also fell.

With hearts full of sorrow, the family wishes to announce that Caroline Bjornson, late of Torquay, SK passed away in Saskatoon, SK on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the age of 91 years. 

A Celebration of Caroline’s life will be held in the spring of 2025.

Estevan’s city councillor candidates gathered recently to outline their plans for strengthening the local economy and improving the community’s future. With a range of perspectives, the debate highlighted the importance of collaboration and proactive solutions for the city’s long-term prosperity. 

Estevan will once again play host to a Remembrance Day Service which will look to invite the whole community to remember Canada's veterans.

That will be held as usual at the Estevan Comprehensive School, with a similar schedule as years before.

Following this week’s U.S. presidential election, questions are coming up about what sort of an impact could happen north of the border, particularly here in Saskatchewan. Canada’s unemployment rate held steady at 6.5 per cent last month as hiring remained weak across the economy.

Statistics Canada’s labour force survey on Friday said employment rose by a modest 15,000 jobs in October.

Business, building and support services saw the largest gain in employment.

Meanwhile, finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing experienced the largest decline.

Many economists see weakness in the job market continuing in the short term, before the Bank of Canada’s interest rate cuts spark a rebound in economic growth next year.

A veteran Ottawa Citizen journalist who was accused by a former cabinet minister of being a Russian asset said it is the "height of irony" that a parliamentary committee studying disinformation has fallen for it. 

David Pugliese told the House of Commons security committee on Thursday he found it astonishing that none of the MPs challenged the allegations when they were made last month. 

The town of Redvers is marking Remembrance Day this year with a new initiative to honour local soldiers. Special signs dedicated to veterans will share the town's history and remind the community of the importance of Remembrance Day.

Jena Cowan, assistant chief administrative officer for Redvers, said they felt Halloween and Christmas were overshadowing Remembrance Day, so they wanted to bring a project that would expand on the important day.
