Estevan's Civic Election is heating up with another candidate putting their hat in the ring. Today, Councillor Rebecca Foord has announced that she is running for mayor. 

"I believe our community needs a strong leader who can lead them through any challenges this community is going to face," she expressed. 

The campaign is in full swing for the 2024 Saskatchewan provincial election. We are reaching out to the leaders of the parties of the province and will be asking them the same set of questions.  

Rose Buscholl is the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan and will be running in the riding of Humboldt-Watrous. We caught up with her on Thursday morning.

Government business has been put on indefinite pause in the House of Commons and the Conservatives say it will stay that way until the Liberals hand over documents related to misspent government dollars.

Last week, Speaker Greg Fergus ruled that the government "clearly did not fully comply" with an order from the House to provide documents related to a now-defunct foundation responsible for doling out hundreds of millions of federal dollars for green technology projects.

Estevan Fire Rescue crews were out this afternoon battling a fire just south of Estevan, near the Hidden Valley Golf & RV Resort.

Crews were contending with the fire which was blowing smoke across Highway 18 just after noon.

Fire Chief Rick Davies says that crews attended the fire and managed to extinguish it. No injuries or damage were reported from the fire.

EFR is now looking into the cause of the fire with an investigation underway.

Residents in Southeast Saskatchewan have been experiencing a surprising drop in temperatures, with wind chill factors plummeting to -8°C overnight. 

The Saskatchewan Graduation Retention Program is one area that has entered discussions as the provincial parties are vying for the top spot during this election.

Saskatchewan Party leader Scott Moe addressed the program claiming that it would be a priority going forward to ensure that graduates would stay in Saskatchewan.

A Manitoba man convicted of murder 50 years ago has been acquitted.

Clarence Woodhouse was found guilty in 1974 of fatally beating and stabbing a restaurant worker in downtown Winnipeg.

He was granted parole in 1983 and filed last year for a ministerial review of his conviction.

His lawyers argued a confession Woodhouse supposedly made was in fluent English, although he primarily spoke Saulteaux.

Eberhard “Eddie” Barmann
1936 - 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Eberhard “Eddie” Barmann announce his passing on Saturday, September 28th, 2024. Eddie went on to his next adventure surrounded by the love of his family and the kind and caring staff at the wonderful Fillmore Health Centre. 

Estevan's streets will see a couple of closures today as city crews are hard at work before the ground freezes.

The first closure will see the 700 block of George Street closed for a sewer replacement.

As well, there will be no through traffic for Grundeen Crescent from Pettigrew Road to Thorn Crescent, with the road also closed from Nicholson Road to Thorn Crescent, all for construction work.

In both cases, the city asks that people slow down and watch out for workers when near those sites.
