All Canada Classic showcases top sheep breeding stock

The All Canada Classic Sheep Show returned to Brandon this past weekend, bringing together sheep producers from across the country to showcase breeding stock and connect with fellow industry members.

With about 250 sheep for sale and attendees from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, the event marked a milestone for the national sheep industry.

A local success story

Brandon last hosted the national show in 1981, and the event remained here for three years before moving westward across the country.

Estevan Police investigate stolen semi, quad escape and multiple impaired driving cases

A spate of incidents, including impaired driving arrests, a stolen semi-truck, and an attempted quad escape, have kept Estevan Police busy this week.

On July 15, Estevan Police Service (EPS) responded to a report of a female found unconscious near the 7-11 on King Street. Officers determined she had been involved in a bicycle accident. A family member transported her to hospital for assessment.

Backpack Program, Bible Camp highlight Salvation Army’s summer work

The Estevan Salvation Army is continuing to operate at full capacity throughout the summer months, with several key programs underway or launching soon.

Applications for the backpack program, which provides school supplies to families in need, are now open. Community Ministries Director Ronza Reynard said families can stop by the office to apply.

“Folks can come down and fill out an application if they need assistance with school supplies,” she said.

Nine teams set to converge in Estevan for U15B Softball Provincials this weekend

The Jody Waloshyn Softball Diamonds beside Pleasantdale School will be busy this weekend, as 9 teams from southern Saskatchewan are set to arrive for the U15B South Softball Provincial Championships. 

Estevan Minor Softball is set to host the event, with the surging U15B Estevan Elite team being the home team. Marketing advisor for the club, Rebecca Foord, is thrilled for the event coming back to the city. 

Cooler conditions aid haying, spraying efforts in the southeast

Cooler conditions across the region last week kept producers busy with haying operations and fungicide applications.

In the weeks ahead, producers will continue to monitor for pests and disease development, while also preparing harvest equipment.

Rainfall amounts varied throughout the region over the past week, with the highest total recorded in the Churchbridge area at 33 millimetres. Broadview received 31 mm, while the Bethune and Balcarres areas each recorded 29 mm.

Taste of Summer BBQ brings big crowd and big support for Estevan Minor Baseball

The grill was hot, the crowd was hungry, and support for local sports was stronger than ever at Wednesday’s Taste of Summer Charity BBQ, hosted by Kingston Midstream.

Held outside Local Buzz Liquor, the event raised $1,390 for Estevan Minor Baseball. 

“It was fantastic,” said EMB President Mel Murray. “Tons of people came out, people I haven’t seen in a long time. It was great to catch up, and the support for the kids was really good.”

Murray said the money will be added to their budget and used where it is most needed.

First mineral rights offering of the year tops $1M, led by Estevan-area lithium bids

Strong interest in lithium around Estevan helped drive Saskatchewan’s first mineral rights offering of the year past the $1 million mark, led by a major bid from Millennium Land Ltd.

Four of 11 available permits were acquired in the July offering, which brought in just over $1 million in revenue. The permits covered a total area of 22,911 hectares and are all considered prospective for lithium-bearing formation water.
