Estevan council approves tenders for paint, dust control, and gravel supply

The Estevan City Council approved a series of tenders during their recent meeting, following the recommendations from the Public Works Manager.

The first tender was for traffic paint, with Sherwin-Williams awarded the contract for their Pro Mar Line product at a cost of $39,951.85. Councillor Shelly Veroba made the motion, seconded by Councillor Kirsten Walliser, noting that Sherwin-Williams was the most cost-effective option within the 2025 budget and had demonstrated adequate longevity in previous years. The motion passed unanimously.

Tough competition in the show ring for the Western Dairy Expo and 1st Annual Legends of the Industry Awards handed out

The Western Dairy Expo wrapped up Saturday in Saskatoon. 

This year's event featured 200 Holstein and about 60 Jersey cows and heifers and was judged by Paul Trapp a product acquisition specialist with Semex USA out of Wisconsin, and his associate judge Jon Larson.

Estevan police charge suspects in theft, fraud and breach of court orders

The Estevan Police Service responded to a series of incidents between April 25 and 27, resulting in several arrests for theft, fraud, public disturbances and breaches of court conditions. Investigations into some of the matters are ongoing.

On April 25, the Estevan Police Service received a driving complaint regarding an unauthorized driver operating a vehicle without a proper license. The matter remains under investigation.

Estevan team wins provincial 8-ball tournament at the Estevan Legion

A recent sports event had 8-ball pool teams from all across the province heading to Estevan to take part in the tournament at the Estevan Legion. With 288 games played, it was quite the process, with the hometown Estevan 2 team coming out on top.

That consists of Steve Valentine, Steven Lalonde, Burt Blondeau, and Doug Cairns, who talked a bit about the road to get there.

"It was quite the grind, but it was a lot of fun," said Blondeau.

Killer performance helps raise funds for Souris Valley Theatre

The Souris Valley Theatre swapped scripts for suspects this weekend, as its Gravestone Wild West Murder Mystery fundraiser challenged audiences to catch a killer — and raised money for the local stage.

Allison Holzer, president of the theatre, said the idea came from the murder mystery games often hosted at home, but they turned it into a play.

“Our actors put together several different kinds of scenes, and the audience needs to guess who they think the murderer is,” said Holzer. “Eventually, someone is murdered out of the group.”

Father, mother, daughter, 5, killed in Vancouver festival attack, leave son behind

Richard Le sent a text to his 16-year-old son on Saturday at about 8 p.m., saying the rest of the family would be leaving the Lapu Lapu Day festival shortly. Instead, Richard, his wife Linh Hoang and their five-year-old daughter Katie were run down moments after the text was sent, Richard's brother, Toan, said Monday.

Police and witnesses have said a black SUV raced down a street lined with food trucks, scattering people in its wake, killing 11 and injuring dozens of others, some of whom remain in hospital in critical or serious condition. 

Research shows multi-species cover crops enhance soil health

Multi-species cover crops are proving to be a valuable tool in improving soil health and boosting farm productivity, according to ongoing research led by Dr. Bharat Shrestha at Beaverlodge Research Farm. Dr. Shrestha, the biology study lead in soil health and fertility development, is part of a collaborative project under the Peace River Living Lab initiative, funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Agricultural Climate Solutions - Living Lab program.

Fire crews battle grass fire near Hitchcock, respond to three false alarms

Estevan Fire and Rescue responded to a call on Saturday morning for a grass fire reported along Highway 39 Northwest of Hitchcock. 

Crews responded and worked to extinguish grass fire. The fire had spread into area consisting of stored vehicles, lumber and miscellaneous equipment. Additional crews were called to assist in extinguishment.

Crews were out for approx. 4.5 hours with no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Throughout the week, EFR also responded to three false alarms.

Envision explores feasibility of domestic violence shelter in the southeast

Residents, workers, students over the age of 16 are being asked for their input on southeast Saskatchewan's capacity to support people escaping gender based and domestic violence. 

Envision Counselling and Support Centre is heading up a feasibility study looking at the possibility of creating a shelter in the region. Executive Director at Envision, Lynda Rideout, explains this will serve an important need for domestic violence victims in the region.
