Federal ministers were told of increasing 'volume and complexity' of foreign threats

A newly released document shows federal cabinet ministers were warned in May 2022 that hostile states were targeting Canada's strategic interests, the integrity of Canadian institutions and democratic processes, and the ability of the public to exercise Charter-protected rights and freedoms.

The document is a summary of one of four memorandums to cabinet, generally considered closely held confidences, that were provided to a federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference as part of its terms of reference. 

Dr. Preston Celebrated for Lifetime Achievements in Agriculture and Veterinary Services

This past summer Hamiota veterinarian and cattle producer, Dr. Allen Preston, was inducted into the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame, recognizing him for his dedication and commitment to Manitoba agriculture in his community, as well as to the province as a whole.

Dr. Preston was nominated for this prestigious award by the Hamiota Agricultural Society with strong support from the local 4H club which he had been a leader for about 15 years starting in 1986.

Ottawa invests more money in organic research

The Federal government has announced over $6.8 million over five years for the Organic Science Cluster is geared to research and advancing sustainable practices. 

Allison Squires is president of the Canadian Organic Growers says the organic sector is unique in that it encompasses everything from aquaculture to cranberries to horticulture and field crops.

She says this pot of money will go towards projects in all these different areas, out of the 14 projects two are based in the prairies.

Severe gusts leave Southern Manitoba wind blown for second consecutive weekend

An intense Alberta clipper crossed the province Saturday and with it came strong to severe wind gusts for much of Southern Manitoba. This was the second consecutive weekend the region experienced winds between 70 and 90+ km/h

“It was a very similar scenario to what we had last Sunday through Monday at the end of September,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “Strong southerly winds ahead of the lows arrival due to its counterclockwise rotation, then shifting westerly and northwesterly as it moved through and the cold front passed.”

On October 6th at 9:18am Police noted a 28-year-old male in the 1100 block of 19th Street. The male had a Failure to Attend Court Warrant. He was arrested, held in detention cells, and will attend court in the morning on October 7th, 2024.

On October 4th, Police received a report of a male that had uttered threats towards his grandmother, causing her to flee the residence in fearing for her safety. Police located the 26yr old male suspect and while being arrested, he attempted to strike the officer. He was eventually released on an Undertaking to appear in Court in December.
