Mayor says school site ready to go, more to follow
Mayor Jeff Genung is hopeful the province's school construction accelerator program means we'll be getting more schools sooner.
"I've long said Cochrane has been the recipient of a lot of new residents and it's putting extreme pressures on all of our schools and frankly on all of our infrastructure," says Genung. "It was great to see the UCP government step forward and announce a plan to get more schools built in the province."
Among the eight new school sites identified by the Cochrane, there's one in Heartland that is shovel ready.
Prairie South School Division hosting The Incredible Years
The Prairie South School Division is once again putting on The Incredible Years program.
The 12-week program is designed for parents of children aged five to 12 who struggle with emotion regulation, intense emotions, difficulty making decisions, outbursts, aggression, impulsivity, and/or defiance.

RCMP inviting Ponoka residents to have 'Coffee with a Cop'
The Ponoka RCMP are inviting local residents to have Coffee with a Cop.
The local detachment is hosting an informal meet and greet on September 24 at 5 p.m. at the Ponoka Arena.
"Ponoka RCMP is dedicated to maintaining direct open lines of communication with the communities we serve. We would like to get to know area residents better, discuss your concerns and ideas about law enforcement and conversely create an opportunity for you to get to know your local police officers and discuss our duties and responsibilities," stated an RCMP news release.
The Big One endures a big storm for a big crowd

Moose Jaw Terry Fox Run raises over $5,000
Canadian icon Terry Fox sparked a nationwide movement with his annual runs, raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
Here in Moose Jaw, a Terry Fox run was held on Sunday, starting from Vanier Collegiate. There were two distances participants had the option of running in the 5 km or 10 km run.
"It went great, we had a little over 60 participants which is only a few runners short from last year. So that's still on par with where we were at for this year," said the organizer of the Moose Jaw Terry Fox run, Stephanie Meyer.
Swift Current gears up for final stock car races of the season
Local racing enthusiasts, southwest residents, and families can enjoy a fun final weekend of stock car racing coming up this weekend in Swift Current.
The Swift Current Stock Car Racing Association will host the event at the Kinetic Exhbition Park's dirt track beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Railway companies’ operations returning to normal after labour disruption
Canada’s two major railway companies are returning to normal operations after a labour disruption in late August brought rail shipments to a halt.
Members of the Teamsters Rail union were locked out by their employers on Aug. 22, affecting both the CPKC and CN rail lines. The dispute was resolved later that day with the Minister of Labour’s decision to refer the matter to binding arbitration. The Teamsters union had issued a 72-hour strike notice effective for Sept. 26, which was nullified by the binding arbitration process.
Local foundation surpasses $1 million milestone
The Airdrie and District Community Foundation (ADCF) has reached its 10-year goal three years early.
The foundation now has a permanent principal fund of over $1 million dollars.
A registered charity, The Airdrie and District Community Foundation allows people and organizations to donate tax-deductible funds to a lasting financial legacy that will benefit Airdrie for years to come. Those who donate have the option to pick where their funds go. Each year, the foundation only donates the interest of all that is donated.
