Community food drive returns to Okotoks and High River

The annual Community Food Drive is returning to Okotoks and High River this week.

Each year, volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints deliver bags to houses across the Foothills. Residents fill the bags with food bank donations and leave them on their front porches for later collection.

This year's Okotoks event will see bags delivered on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 17 and 18) and collected on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Wilkie RCMP lay multiple charges in separate incidents

A 69-year-old Wilkie man is facing charges of uttering threats, mischief, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle after police responded to a complaint about an unwanted individual at a residence last week.

In a separate case, a youth has been charged with assault and mischief following a report of an assault.

From Sept. 2 to 8, Wilkie RCMP also received complaints of property damage, breach of an undertaking, and a suspicious vehicle, with investigations ongoing in some cases.

Rosetown sentencing includes jail, probation and 20-year sex offender registration

A man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for sexually assaulting a minor and possessing a prohibited weapon.

Jarrett Pearce, who was 21 at the time of the offences, pleaded guilty in Rosetown provincial court to one count of sexual assault and one count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon. A publication ban is in place to protect the identity of the victim, who was 15 years old when the offences occurred.

Provincial powerlifting championships draw 70 athletes to Moose Jaw

The 2025 Saskatchewan Powerlifting Association (SPA) Provincial Championships brought approximately 70 athletes to the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds Convention Centre for three days of competition, with provincial and national records already falling.

Rhaea Stinn, a reigning world champion in multiple categories whose most recent successes were at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, said the event exceeded expectations in its first session.

West Central woman serving sentence in the US for child exploitation 

A 25-year-old Saskatchewan woman is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States for offences related to child exploitation, including the distribution and attempted distribution of sexually explicit material involving minors.

Melissa Markwart, who is being held at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama, was sentenced to three years in custody and has already served approximately one year of her sentence. Court documents indicate she was involved in producing, distributing, and possessing material depicting the sexual abuse of children.

Go Green spouts new efforts in Swift Current parks and pathways

Go Green has sprouted another huge community effort once again in Swift Current. 

Beginning last Friday, the annual green space initiative was launched at Market Square alongside the launch of 50/50 For Change, which is in support of the Southwest Facility Foundation this year. 

Darcy Congdon, director of operations for Stark & Marsh, which heads up the Go Green initiative along with Innovation Federal Credit Union, was thrilled to see 110 people register for Go Green at Market Square. 

Outlook family battles rare brittle bone disease, online fundraiser launched

An online fundraising campaign has been launched to support a family in Outlook living with brittle bone disease.

Katie Bell and her two youngest children, Maizie and Atlas, have all been diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare genetic disorder that weakens connective tissues and prevents proper bone development. The disease makes even minor falls or bumps potentially life-threatening.
