Hail & high winds included in severe thunderstorms forecasted for southwest

Residents across southwest Saskatchewan can expect a burst of active weather today, with severe thunderstorms and a short-lived heatwave on the horizon, according to forecasts.

A low-pressure system developing in Alberta is expected to track northeastward into northern Saskatchewan by Wednesday night. Ahead of the system, a surge of warm, humid air will spread across southern parts of the province, particularly by late Wednesday afternoon, helping to fuel thunderstorm development.

Winkler welcomes new citizens in powerful Canada Day celebration

It was a Canada Day to remember as the community came together in a vibrant display of cultures at this year’s Culture Fest, hosted in conjunction with July 1st celebrations near the Meridian Exhibition Centre at Parkland Stage in Winkler. 

The afternoon event was spearheaded in part by Regional Connections, whose settlement workers and staff were on site showcasing their cultures alongside dozens of other booths, activities, and stage performances. 

Manitoba Youth Job Centre providing skills, support, and summer opportunities

Young people across southern Manitoba have access to a free support program this summer through the Manitoba Youth Job Centre (MYJC) operating in Morden, Winkler, Carman, and Portage la Prairie. 

Youth Engagement Leader Anna Nikkel serves youth aged 13 to 29 with job-related tools and services from resume preparation to interview coaching. 

Netflix teases season 2 of locally filmed show

Netflix has shared a first look at season two of My Life With the Walter Boys, which was partially filmed in Okotoks and High River last year.

The show is an adaptation of Ali Novak's novel of the same name. It follows a 15-year-old girl who loses her family in a tragic car accident and is taken in by the Walter family, which consists of 10 boys and one girl.

Record turnout for Rotary’s Canada Day pancake breakfast

A familiar Portage la Prairie tradition saw a record-breaking crowd on Canada Day as the Rotary Club served up pancakes, sausages, and community spirit during its annual Canada Day breakfast at Island Park.

Preston Meier with the Portage Rotary Club says the response from the community is overwhelming in the best way.

“The breakfast was amazing, the day was incredible. I don't think you could ask for a better day,” notes Meier. “Numbers were record-breaking numbers. We had close to 400 people that showed up for breakfast.”

RCMP Police Dog training underway in Red Deer

If you happen to see a lot of cops and dogs out today in Red Deer don't be alarmed.

The Alberta RCMP is letting the public know that officers of the Police Dog Services are currently engaged in training with police dogs in Red Deer.

The officers are dressed in both dark blue and green uniforms, different than the usual service uniforms.

There is no ongoing incident or risk to the public.

City of Swift Current brings community together for Canada Day celebration

The City of Swift Current helped celebrate Canada Day in a unique way. 

Canada Together was a free event put on by the city at Memorial Park to celebrate Canada’s 158th birthday, complete with a barbecue, cupcakes, and live entertainment. 

Partnerships and Events Coordinator with the City of Swift Current, Brad Woods was happy to see the community come together to celebrate. 

Highway 3, east of Carman reopens following collision

Update: Highway 3 east of Carman has reopened following a collision on Wednesday morning. 

The closure lasted just over an hour. 

Previously: Highway 3, five kilometres east of Carman is closed on Wednesday morning.

The closure is due to a motor vehicle collision. 

One witness told CHVN it looks to be a fairly serious collision.

There is no word on what caused the collision or any injuries.

Strathmore Stampede Parade to hit the streets with new organizers

In less than a month, the August long weekend kicks off with the Strathmore Stampede Parade.

In recent years, the Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce has organized the parade, but this year, Rocket Grid Marketing has taken over the reins.

Tyler Hille, Founder & CEO of Rocket Grid, explained why they decided to take on the job of organizing.

Cyclist injured in La Broquerie crash

A cyclist was transported to hospital following a crash Wednesday morning in La Broquerie.

Fire Chief J.C. Normandeau says his department received the call at 9:37 am. He explains that a male cyclist riding an e-bike was heading north down Main Street, when he was hit by a car turning onto Main Street from Gauthier Street.

"Obviously, the car operator did not see the cyclist coming by and then accidentally hit him," says Normandeau.

He says the cyclist was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.
