Premier Smith has a multi-billion dollar plan to tackle student enrollment surge

In her evening address to the province, Premier Smith announced that her cabinet and Treasury Board have approved a new school construction accelerator program to address the province's exploding student enrollment growth.

"We will be increasing our K to 12 capital budget for new school spaces and modernizations to approximately $8.6 billion over the next three years," she said. "This will allow us to complete actual construction on approximately 50,000 new student spaces over the next three years and to complete and open 150,000 new spaces over the next four years."

A power outage south of Maple Creek has left some SaskPower customers in the dark this evening.

According to the Crown corporation, crews were dispatched to the area to determine the cause of the outage and repair time. 

Cypress Hills is one of the areas being affected by the outage.

44 drivers fined for speeding on Highway 1 near Portage Monday

A ticket blitz resulted in many motorists heading to their destination with lighter wallets.

Manitoba RCMP shared stunning numbers regarding many motorists being caught speeding on the highway around Portage on Monday.

For a good part of the day, September 16, RCMP paid extra attention, and 44 vehicles were fined for speeds ranging from 118 to 139 km/h in the 100 zone on Trans-Canada near Portage la Prairie.

Tornado warning issued for small portion of southwest

A tornado warning has been issued for the R.M. Wiska Creek this evening by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The warning, issued at 6:04 p.m. for Vanguard, Neville, and Pambrun area, is due to a severe weather thunderstorm that's passing through the region.

According to meteorologists, the system is capable of producing a tornado, strong winds, large hail, and intense rainfall.

Residents of this area are encouraged by Environment and Climate Change Canada to head indoors and take shelter.

Man injured after truck overturns at Cochrane construction site

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital following a workplace incident in Cochrane this afternoon. 

Cochrane RCMP responded to Rivercrest View at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday after a worker was hit by an overturned picker truck.

The man was taken to hospital by ground ambulance with unknown injuries. 

Unique lunar eclipse visible from Strathmore tonight

A special partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Strathmore on Tuesday (Sept. 17) during the night.

This is the second lunar eclipse of the year, with the eclipse also serving as both a supermoon and a harvest moon.

According to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada based in Calgary, the supermoon is a full moon closest to Earth in orbit, making it appear slightly larger in the sky.

A harvest moon is the closest full moon to the fall equinox, which is when there is an equal amount of daytime and nighttime.

Brandon's 18th Street Reconstruction Begins Wednesday, September 18th

The City of Brandon is working in coordination with the Province of Manitoba and their partners to provide updates regarding 18th Street Reconstruction Project.

Starting tomorrow, September 18th, Zenith Paving Ltd. will begin milling and placing new asphalt on 18th Street from Aberdeen Ave to Rosser Ave. The project will be completed in stages. Expect minor concrete repairs, asphalt milling, and paving.

Rainwatchers report southeast inundated with water

Basements are flooded, roads are washed out and canoes could be seen floating down city streets in the wake of thunderstorms that dropped a deluge of water on southern Manitoba.

The rain started Monday morning and lasted at least 24 hours in many locations. 

Manitoba Agriculture is reporting the following totals as of Tuesday at 4 pm: 

Steinbach homeowners dealing with flooded basements

Many residents in Steinbach experienced flooding on Tuesday due to the heavy rain in the Southeast. 

Darrell Dyck has lived on Home Street North for 17 years, and has never had any issues close to this in the past.  

“On our street, there's a very major drain right close by. We've had water up to our driveway on the road, this time it was exponentially further, so I don't have sewer backup coverage because I figured we've never had trouble, this is the first.” 

The chaos started Tuesday morning when he was in the middle of a video call.
