Rocky View County Tim Hortons hit in cross-province crime spree; suspect arrested

A five-month investigation led by the RCMP Southern Alberta Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) culminated in the arrest of 25-year-old Joshua Elliot Moose of Medicine Hat after an alleged cross-provincial spree targeting Tim Hortons locations, including in Rocky View County.

Strathmore resident builds poppy displays around town

Several stores in Strathmore are adorned with crochet poppies thanks to one resident and her friends.

Marj Ireland had the idea of bringing crochet poppies to local businesses for years, and 2024 was the first year her idea came to life.

"It's been fun," said Ireland. "It's been lots of work, but not only by me. There's been lots of women that have done poppies."

Janet, Marion, and Pat are a group of local crocheters who created the 5,225 poppies by hand, which Ireland has placed around Strathmore.

No Stone Left Alone gives Estevan locals a look at sacrifices made by veterans

Estevan was home to another No Stone Left Alone ceremony today, with community representatives and students coming out to the Souris Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetary.

Fewer students than usual attended, with the majority of schools either having conflicting events or cancelling due to a lack of students.

Wetaskiwin RCMP seek public assistance in identifying road rage suspect

On Nov. 2 at 4:23 p.m., the Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of an assault that just occurred on 3 Avenue in the Village of Hay Lakes.

Police and EMS assisted victims with several significant injuries.

Investigation revealed that a group of individuals pulled up to a home, and were approached by vehicle and a driver who confronted them on their driving.

The suspect exited his vehicle and a physical altercation took place with punches thrown and one individual dragged alongside the suspect vehicle.

R.M. of Weyburn election details: who is running; where, when to vote

While the City of Weyburn's municipal election is underway, there is also an election happening for the Rural Municipality of Weyburn.

Two candidates are running for the office of Reeve of the R.M. of Weyburn. Incumbent Norm McFadden, who is seeking re-election, and James 'Bud' Grohn, who is also running for the Reeve position. 

Two candidates, Doug Dembiczak and Mike Dorsch, are running for the office of Councillor for Division One.

Estevan Police seek truck driver in pedestrian hit-and-run incident

The Estevan Police Service responded to several incidents on Nov. 4, including a collision involving a pedestrian.

Police received a report of a truck that collided with a woman who was walking her bike. The driver stopped to check on the woman before leaving the scene. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries and her bike was damaged. Police believe a language barrier may have prevented an exchange of information and are asking the driver to contact them. Anyone with information, or who witnessed the collision, is asked to call the Estevan Police Service at 306-635-4767.

Over $50,000 in drugs and cash seized in south Calgary community

A search warrant in a community 20 minutes north of Okotoks resulted in police discovering over $50,000 worth of drugs and cash.

In February, the Calgary Police Service started an investigation on a man they believed was involved in drug trafficking, and took note of a white 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee he could often be seen driving.

They carried out a warrant on a home in Cranston on October 28, which included the search of two vehicles.

In the Jeep Grand Cherokee, they found a hidden compartment containing cash, drugs, and a handgun.

Election costs skyrocketing, bylaw revisions in works

The tally of how much more Cochrane will face in expenses to hold its October municipal election hasn't been finalized but it's likely more than $100,000.

Revisions made to the province's Local Authorities Election due to the passing of Bill 20 in the spring will cost the town an estimated $70,000 alone to create and maintain the elector register, Jaylene Robertson, director of legislative and administrative services told town council last night (Nov. 4).
