Near-zero visibility prompts Fog Advisory

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Fog Advisory for the region.

The advisory began just after 5 a.m. on Friday (Sept. 5) due to dense fog bringing near-zero visibility to the area.

"Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero," wrote the organization. "Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations."

The fog is expected to leave the area later in the morning.

Bondi says human smuggling across the border with Canada is getting worse

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday human smuggling across the border with Canada is getting worse — and that traffickers are looking north following the Trump administration's crackdown at the border with Mexico.

"The northern border, it always has been, but it's gotten much worse, much more prevalent because … it's a multibillion-dollar business, the smuggling of drugs, guns and humans," Bondi said during a news conference in Tampa, Fla.

Officials, Indigenous leaders respond to mass stabbing on Manitoba First Nation

Messages of condolences and support poured in for a Manitoba First Nation after a mass stabbing on Thursday, including from a First Nation in Saskatchewan that experienced one of its own exactly three years earlier.

Police say eight people were found severely injured in two homes on Hollow Water First Nation, northeast of Winnipeg.

An 18-year-old woman died while the suspect, her 26-year-old brother, died after the stolen vehicle he was driving collided with a vehicle driven by a police officer responding to the attack.

What you need to know about Strathmore's HIG service

Strathmore's Heavy Item Garbage (HIG) service is back this month, helping residents clear out large waste items from the curbside. 

The biannual waste service will run from Sept.11 to Sept. 19, collecting garbage from curbs throughout the town. 

Before the HIG pickup begins, the Trash to Treasure service will run from Sept. 11 to Sept. 14. This program encourages residents to place usable large items, such as dressers, washers and dryers, couches, and barbecues, on the curb for others to take free of charge.

A family-friendly evening of food, fun, and connection is set to return to Strathmore.

Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is hosting its second annual Community Connection Night at Kinsmen Park on Friday, (Sept. 5), starting at 5:30 p.m. 

The event aims to bring resident together with activities for all ages, including a chance to explore local community resources, enjoy a barbecue dinner, and watch an outdoor screening of Disney-Pixar's Inside Out 2 at 8 p.m.

Suspect in mass stabbing on Manitoba First Nation killed in crash with Mountie

A brother and sister are dead and several others, including a Mountie, injured after a mass stabbing Thursday on a Manitoba First Nation.

Police say the woman, 18, was among those stabbed by her brother, 26-year-old Tyrone Simard, in the early morning attack on the Hollow Water First Nation northeast of Winnipeg.

Langdon Community Library prepares for temporary closure

The Langdon Community Library will be temporarily closed while upgrades are underway. 

The Fieldhouse parking lot is scheduled to be repaved from Sept. 20 to Oct. 6, limiting access to the library building. 

The Langdon Community Association announced that while the parking lot is closed, residents can still access Langdon Park and the Fieldhouse via detour routes. However, library members will not be able to access the library during this time.

Any books that were previously on hold can instead be picked up at the Chestermere Public Library.

Sacred Heart Academy celebrates major milestone

Graduations are always meaningful milestones for students and teachers. Each year, generations of students pass through school hallways, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. 

But for Sacred Heart Academy, this year marks a different kind of milestone, one that only comes once.

The Catholic elementary school is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a community celebration on Thursday (Sept. 4) from 5 to 7 p.m. on the school grounds. The event will feature games, activities, and food, and is open to all ages.

Two dead, including suspect, in mass stabbing on Manitoba First Nation

RCMP say two people, including a suspect, are dead after a mass stabbing at Hollow Water First Nation in Manitoba.

They say at least six people are in hospital after the attack this morning in the community 200 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

Health officials say two victims were airlifted to Winnipeg, while others were taken by ground ambulance.

RCMP describe the attack as a "senseless act of violence."
