Strathmore mourns the loss of Barbara Narajiwsky

Many residents of the Town of Strathmore are mourning the loss of Barb Narajiwsky, who recently passed away.

She died on Saturday, Mar. 15.

Narajiwsky served as the food and beverage manager at the Strathmore Family Centre for nearly a decade, with the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings offering their condolences through a social media post.

"Her dedication, warmth, and hard work made a lasting impact on everyone who had the pleasure of working alongside her," wrote the Kings.

Strathmore curler celebrates U15 provincial championship win

A Strathmore curler is celebrating a big milestone.

"It was amazing to win, for sure," said Andrew Southworth.

The club celebrated its 100th game together over the weekend and won the U15 provincial championships.

"We've been together for two years now, and as we started as our team that was our goal was to win the Alberta Winter Games, which was last year, and then to win provincials."

Southworth has been curling for eight years and picked up the sport when his family participated in bonspiels.

RCMP say missing Drumheller man found safe

Police in Drumheller have located a missing man.

A police release from early Wednesday morning said twenty-eight-year-old Daniel Robert Coleman was last seen in Drumheller on Mar. 16 in the 1200 block of South Railway Avenue.

Coleman was described as having short sandy brown hair with a red beard. He is six feet one inch with a slim build, and wears glasses.

Wednesday is the day for Strathmore and Wheatland County business leaders to gather, drink wine and eat cheese.

The Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce and 104.5 More Country are hosting a new event called Sips and Socialize.

The event will begin this afternoon at the 104.5 More Country studio at 265 Edgefield Place.

It starts at 4 p.m.

Brooks RCMP searching for missing person

Brooks RCMP is looking for the public's help to find a missing person.

According to police, 32-year-old Joshua Kinsella-Gow, also known as Astrid, was last seen on Feb. 11 at the Okotoks 7-Eleven near Denny's.

"They may have been travelling to the Calgary area," wrote officers in a news release. "Brooks RCMP is concerned for their well-being and would like to speak with them."

On Monday, Mar. 24, it was announced that Kinsella-Gow had been found safe.

Synergy launches free workshop to help local teens find scholarships

Synergy Connects has introduced a program to help local students find scholarships.

The Youth Scholarship Application Workshop will take place at the Qualico Resource Centre in Langdon on Wednesday, Mar. 19, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Terry Gill, manager of the leadership team at Synergy, said this is the first year the event is being hosted.

"A lot of volunteers have been struggling with scholarship applications, and we're seeing that need more and more, so we decided to start up the workshop."

Novia Scotia MP looking forward to working with Western Canada as new federal ag minister

Canada has a new Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister after Mark Carney took over as Prime Minister last week. Kody Blois, an MP from the Nova Scotia riding of Kings-Hants has been tapped for the role.

Blois says he has plenty of experience in the industry being raised in an area where agriculture is important.

Liberals lagging behind other parties on nominating candidates as election looms

With a federal election call expected any day now, the Liberal party has only nominated about half of the candidates it would need to have a full slate on the ballot even as their polling numbers have been jump-started following their recent leadership race.

There will be 343 ridings contested in the upcoming vote and the Conservatives have nominated candidates in 275 of them so far. The NDP has 217 candidates and the Green Party has 208.

Consumers could find 'meaningful savings' as carbon price ends: Desjardins

Canadians can expect to feel the absence of the consumer carbon price at the pumps immediately but it may take longer to notice a difference in the price of other goods, a new report released Wednesday suggests.

The analysis by Desjardins Economics comes less than a week after Prime Minister Mark Carney and his new Liberal cabinet ordered that the consumer levy be set to zero on April 1.

The carbon price came with a quarterly rebate to offset the cost of inflation; the final rebate will come in April.

Public survey now open in Drumheller to shape future community standards bylaw

The Town of Drumheller is launching a public survey for residents to give feedback on the updated community standards bylaw.

According to the town, the public participation plan was approved by council on March 3, with the survey launching just two days later.

"The public engagement will include a survey where residents can rank community standards issues based on importance," wrote the town on its website.

Although specific changes have not been given, the public's feedback will be used to guide the development and priorities of the new bylaw.
