Weyburn Red Wings struggle in Humboldt

A 10-minute span in the first period would set the tone for the game Wednesday night between the Weyburn Red Wings and Humboldt Broncos.

Matthew Van Blaricom scored his fifth goal of the season on Red Wings netminder Dazza Mitchell 3:11 into the first period. When Cage Newans scored with 6:11 left on the clock, it made the score 5-0 for the Broncos in the first period, as Spencer Bell, Brayden Skogstad and Van Blaricom scored in the intervening time span. 

Humboldt didn't stop there, as they would score five more times over the final two periods to make it a 10-1 final.

The Weyburn Red Wings, coming off a tough weekend against Melfort, are back on the road today to prepare for their game against the Humboldt Broncos. 

“You know, it's good to get right back at it,” said Head Coach Cody Mapes. “You don't want to sit and dwell on a weekend that maybe could have could have gone a little better. But in saying that I think there's a lot of positives out of the weekend too. But it's good to get right back at it against a real good team here.” 

Penalty-Filled battle as Red Wings fall in Melfort

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings fell for the first time in regulation this season Saturday night, as they came up short in a 4-3 final in Melfort. The penalty-filled game saw the Red Wings compile 107 minutes in penalties, and the Mustangs 45. 

Between the two teams, there were six game misconducts, two 10-minute misconducts, and two major penalties. A gross misconduct was also handed out to the Red Wings bench late in the third period. 

Weyburn Red Wings riding momentum into Melfort

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are on the road this weekend, playing the first of three straight road games tonight in Melfort. Weyburn will be entering the game on a four-game winning streak, and off to their best start since the 2015-16 season, with a record of 4-0-0-1, including two wins over the Estevan Bruins. The Mustangs, though, are also on a four-game winning streak.  

Early lead and strong defense propel Red Wings to victory

With five different players finding the back of the net, and Eric Kahl making 30 saves in his first start of the season, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games Tuesday night, beating the Notre Dame Hounds 5-1 at Crescent Point Place. The win also put the Red Wings into sole possession of first place in the SJHL, setting up a pair of crucial games this coming weekend. 

"I thought there were parts of our game here tonight that were good," said Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes. "You know, full of energy and speed."

Mitchell honoured again after strong weekend

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are off to a hot start and will be looking to continue that tonight as they host the Notre Dame Hounds at Crescent Point Place. With points in all four games so far this season, and a three-game winning streak, this is the best start to a season for the Red Wings since the 2015-16 season, when they won three of their first four, with the only loss coming in overtime.  

Weyburn Red Wings extend winning streak with shootout win

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings found themselves heading to overtime for the third time this season, and to a shootout for the second, Saturday night against the Estevan Bruins. The Wings would get great goaltending from Dazza Mitchell, and a beautiful shootout goal from Jacob Visentini to lift them to a 2-1 win over their Highway 39 rivals. 

Red Wings deliver a stunning performance in Estevan

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings entered their game Friday night in Estevan having won four of the previous seven meetings between the clubs, dating back to the 2021-22 season. Over that span, the Wings had also outscored Estevan 29-20. 

After a first period that saw the two clubs tied 2-2, Weyburn seemed to find another gear and would score four unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 win over their Highway 39 rivals.

Rivalry renewed: Red Wings take on Bruins this weekend

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings (1-0-1) will renew their acquaintances with the Estevan Bruins (1-1-0) Friday night when the Wings travel down Highway 39 to take on the Bruins in the first game of a weekend home-and-home. Weyburn is coming off a 1-0 shutout win over the Yorkton Terriers in Yorkton Saturday night, while the Bruins are aiming to bounce back after a 5-0 loss to the Melville Millionaires. 

Dazza Mitchell's outstanding weekend lands him SJHL award

After a stellar performance over the weekend, a member of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings received honours on Monday. Goaltender Dazza Mitchell was named the SJHL's goaltender of the week. 

Over the course of two games against the Yorkton Terriers, Mitchell posted a shutout and allowed just two goals, finishing the weekend with a goals-against average of 0.93, and a save percentage of .964. 

While he was tagged with he shootout loss in Friday night's 3-2 final to start the season, he followed it up with a 1-0 shutout win Saturday night in Yorkton.
