Search underway for sub missing near Titanic wreck off Newfoundland
A search is underway off the coast of Newfoundland for a small submersible reported missing near the wreck of the Titanic.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax says a research submarine was reported overdue around 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 700 kilometres south of St. John’s, N.L.
Lt.-Cmdr. Len Hickey says an Aurora military aircraft and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Kopit Hopson are assisting the search effort, which is being led by the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston.
Drought conditions have led one Alberta county to declare an Agricultural State of Emergency
The County of Stettler is the first to make that declaration.
A very light snowpack with no run-off combined with an early and extended heat wave and no moisture led Council to make the announcement.
In a press release from the county Reeve Larry Clarke says they've been hearing the pleas from farmers and producers and they needed to take action.
Region hit with large amount of rain
The Fort Saskatchewan region has been hit with a barrage of rain over the last few days.
So much so that Environment Canada felt the need to issue a rainfall warning for the area.
"We have this low-pressure system that has been up in Alberta that has been bringing a little bit of a front and some rain in through the area," said Samantha Mauti, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
"It's quite slow moving, so very slow showers are moving through the area."
Bill C-234 won't pass through the Senate before their Summer break
Bill C-234 would see farmers exempt from paying the carbon tax on propane and natural gas used on-farm for drying grain and heating barns.
Conservative Senate David Wells sponsored the bill in the Senate and says it received second reading last week and has been referred to the Finance and Agriculture Committee.
Update: Three kids missing out of St. Albert found safe
Three St. Albert kids who were reported missing have been found.
10-year-old Cameron Bull, 11-year-old Emily Bull, and 13-year-old Mary Bull were last seen together in St. Albert on Sunday (June 18) just after noon.
Police believed the trio was headed to Maskwacis, and was concerned for their well-being.
Just a day later, the three were found safe and returned home.
No other details have been released, but police would like to thank the public for their assistance.
CN Rail is working on putting together their 2023-24 grain plan
CN's assistant vice president of grain David Przednowek says as a result they're watching what's happening with crop development and taking that into account when trying to determine new crop movement.
He says last year, they implemented a lot of operational changes that delivered really strong consistent grain movement and this year is an opportunity to refine the plan and tweak it.
With Grasshoppers being a problem this year, keeping economic thresholds in mind is important
Prairiewide grasshoppers are a key insect to monitor for right now, especially in the southern and drier areas.
Grasshoppers can cause tremendous damage to a crop.
Saskatchewan's insect specialist James Tansey says with that in mind it's important to take note of the economic thresholds for the crop.
Prairie Pest Monitoring Network update
The Prairie Pest Monitoring Network Report shows flea beetles are still out there.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Field Crop Entomologist Dr Meghan Vankosky says farmers should be busy scouting for insects.
"Flea beetles are still out there, but most canola is past the damage stage and patchy reports of cutworm damage are still coming in from Alberta."
She says grasshoppers are going to be an issue across the prairies.
Military investigates sexual misconduct allegation against Snowbirds pilot
The Royal Canadian Air Force is investigating a sexual misconduct allegation against a Snowbirds pilot, and the aerobatics team will be performing a plane short for the time being.
The commanders of 1 and 2 Canadian Air Divisions issued a statement on Saturday saying the allegation has been made against a member of 431 Squadron, which is based in Moose Jaw, Sask., and the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating.
Meet Lamont High's valedictorian
Falynn Short was declared the valedictorian for the class of 2023 at Lamont High.
Short grew up in Bruderheim, attending Bruderheim Elementary before heading into Lamont High.
"It's very small. Everybody knew everybody, which lead to a close community, which is nice," said Short. "There was a lot of support from the teachers."
Going to school during the COVID-19 pandemic, Short said changed the dynamic in how students were taught.
