The Easter weekend has arrived and there is no shortage of things to do! 

Families around the area will be dreaming of hunting eggs and chocolate as communities host their annual easter events, but the weekend's warm weather will also add more layers of enjoyment. 

Here is a look at some things you can enjoy in each community: 

A decade before a Nova Scotia man used smuggled guns to murder 22 people in the province in 2020, police information systems had labelled him as a firearms risk.

Yet those records never found their way to the Canada Border Services Agency, and they didn't prevent the mass shooter from obtaining a Nexus card — granting him status as a low-risk traveller.

Grade 9 students in F.R. Haythorne Junior High will be showcasing their cinematic works at the school's 19th annual Hawk Film Festival.

On Monday (Apr. 17), attendees will view 17 films created by students together at the Sherwood Park Cineplex. 

“I enjoyed making my film,” says Kaden Craig, a Grade 9 student at F.R. Haythorne Junior High. “I highly recommend the Film Production class for anyone interested in movies."

"I got to work with awesome people, and I'd do it again if I could.”

Olivia Miller has been named a Metro Athletics All-Star in basketball.

Miller is a Grade 11 student at Fort Saskatchewan Senior High School, who was given the award in late March.

"It's pretty cool, I didn't expect it," said Miller. "The Metro awards are really good at recognizing people for doing good stuff and working hard, so I appreciated it."

Miller attributes much of her success to her coach. 

"She definitely gave me the opportunity to do good. She put me on the court a lot, and it was really good to get the time to play."

Strathcona County emergency services have cleared up a train derailment that happened on Wednesday (Apr. 5) morning. 

The county reported that a CN train had 17 cars carrying grain go off the rails while in the area of Township Road 524 and Range Road 213. 

No dangerous goods were involved, and nobody was injured. 

CN has yet to provide a reason for the derailment. 

The Masters Tournament will have some local flair to it.

Sherwood Park caddy Danny Sahl will be on the course helping out Canadian golfer, Corey Conners. 

The 43-year-old caddy has carved out quite an interesting career in professional golf. Born in Moose Jaw, Sahl has been playing the sport since he was just eight years old. 

Sahl and Conners are coming off a big win last weekend at the Valero Texas Open. The duo will look to make noise at Augusta this weekend. 

Outside of Conners, Sahl has also caddied for Canadian Mike Weir on the pro circuit. 

Fort Saskatchewan's reputation in the industrial heartland continues to grow. 

On Wednesday (April 5) Mayor Gale Katchur announced that Aurora Hydrogen has received the green light to build a demonstration plant at the Sherritt Technologies facility. 

“Sherritt International was the first industry to establish in Fort Saskatchewan back in the 1950s and I am proud to acknowledge that they are supporting the next phase of our energy transition,” said Katchur.

Church bells are to ring today in Humboldt at the same time as the deadly bus crash brought unimaginable tragedy to the small Saskatchewan city five years ago.

The bells at St. Augustine Church are to toll 29 times — one for each person who was on the bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos on April 6, 2018. Sixteen people died and 13 were injured after a transport truck went through a stop sign and into the path of a bus carrying the Saskatchewan junior hockey team.

The U17 AAA South Fort Chev Rangers are in the final stretch. 

After cruising through the first two rounds of playoffs, the team will now battle it out with the best of the best at provincials.

This year's tournament is being held in St. Albert and will begin today (Apr. 6) and run until Easter Sunday (Apr. 9) 

The team is coming off an extended break with their last game being played nearly two weeks ago. 

"It's been really good," said head coach Mason Hawkes. "We took a little rest time just to get our minds and bodies ready to go." 

A Sherwood Park couple left quite a generous donation to the Strathcona Community Hospital Foundation after passing away. 

The foundation announced last week that Mary and Alfred Kublik had posthumously gifted them with $1.8 million to help the hospital better serve the community. 

"We received a call from a law firm saying they had a cheque for us for $1.8 million as part of the estate of the Kubliks," said Ken Lesniak, the chair of the foundation.
