 A Fort Saskatchewan baseball team took home their league championship last month. 

The U13 Fort Saskatchewan team defeated Beakon 15-5 in the A final to take home first place in the league. 

"We had a pretty good group of kids," said coach Scott Langkow. "Kids worked hard and everything came together." 

Though Langkow says the team didn't have much time to practice throughout the season, they did hold a specific advantage over other teams. 

"Our team had the most pitchers on it for sure. So that helps when the pitch counts are low." 

The Shell Theatre has revealed its newest slate of shows. 

The 2023-2024 season includes a bit of everything, from country music icons and comedy shows to one of Canada's most famous rock bands. It all gets going in September with a special east-coast guest. 

"September is a busy month, we are starting a little bit earlier this year," said Josh Gennings with the Shell Theatre. "Born in Ireland, now residing in P.E.I, Irish Mythen has got poignant lyrics, passionate vocals and a cheeky Irish banter that our audience is going to love."

Environment Canada has issued a Weather Advisory for the area due to conditions being favourable for the development of funnel clouds early this evening.

On Tuesday (July 4) afternoon, a funnel cloud was spotted over the Town of Bruderheim in a Facebook post was made to a local storm watch group.

According to the Alberta Storm Watch Facebook page, the funnel cloud never reached the ground and has since dissipated.

However, there is a chance that weak landspout tornados may drop in the area.

Everyone in Alberta will be able to fish for free this weekend.

July 8 and 9 is Family Fishing Weekend, where Albertans and visitors are able to fish without needing to purchase a sportfishing license.

The weekend also coincides with National Fishing Week, which occurs each year during the second week of July.

Local artist Amanda Milke is showcasing community through her new collaborative art piece.

The piece is on display at the public parklet on 102 street and features bundles of painted leaves hanging from the roof of the parklet.

Milke said that every leaf was painted by a resident of Fort Saskatchewan at the Family Festival earlier this year.

"I've worked with Kristi Wahl and the City of Fort Saskatchewan before," said Milke. "We usually work with the Youth Advisory Committee and doing projects for the Fort that people can participate in."

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has given an update on a car crash that occurred on Highway 28A Tuesday (July 4) morning.

According to police, they responded to a two-vehicle collision where a semi-truck collided with an SUV.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital as a precaution. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The highway is now closed in both directions as officers continue to investigate but is expected to open soon. 

Edmonton emergency services responded to a multiple vehicle collision on Highway 28A, north of Highway 15 and west of Fort Saskatchewan.

The 511 Alberta twitter account posted about the collision early Tuesday (July 4) morning, saying that the crash was causing delays in both directions of the highway. Residents are advised to consider an alternate route. 

According to Edmonton Police Service, the crash occurred between a semi-truck and an SUV.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported.

An NHL player with Ardrossan roots is headed to the lone-star state next season. 

Sam Steel was one of many players to ink a new deal at the start of the NHL free agency period on Saturday (July 1) as he signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Stars worth $850,000. 

Steel cut his teeth in Sherwood Park during his minor hockey years before heading to the Regina Pats of the WHL and then went on to get drafted 30th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2016. 

Canadian farmers reported planting more wheat, canola, barley, corn for grain, and soybeans, but fewer acres of oats, lentils, and dry peas, according to the June 2023 Field Crop Survey.

Favourable conditions across Western Canada allowed producers to complete seeding in a timely manner. In Alberta, seeding was nearly complete by the end of May, just ahead of the average, owing to warm and dry conditions. Planting in Saskatchewan and Manitoba was slightly behind the 5- and 10-year averages because of excess moisture in some areas.

The city of Fort Saskatchewan is no longer under a fire restriction. 

Over the weekend, the city announced that they have moved to a fire advisory after wet conditions lowered the fire risk. 

A fire advisory allows for open air burning such as brush and outside fires as well as burn barrels and fireworks. 

Fort Saskatchewan is the latest region to move towards an advisory following Strathcona County and Lamont County.
