Preseason closes with Pistons victory over Nighthawks

It was the final preseason game for both the Steinbach Pistons and Niverville Nighthawks, as the two rivals wrapped up their exhibition schedule with the second half of a home-and-home, this time, Steinbach came out on top 5-3.

Scoring depth

Coming into the game, both teams had made trims to the roster, deciding to feature lineups that mirrored plans for when the regular season kicks off in a weeks time.

Steinbach would grab a 2-0 lead in the opening period, with both goals coming from depth scoring.

Generations of Red Wings reunite on the ice for alumni game

A thunderstorm lit up the sky outside, but inside the Whitecap Resources Centre Friday night, it was a reunion of generations for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings. Twenty-four alumni players, and a handful of current Red Wings took to the ice for the alumni game, giving fans a chance to see past favourites and connect with old friends.

Back and Forth Battle Ends in OT Loss for Broncos

The Swift Current Broncos pushed the Brandon Wheat Kings to the limit in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair Friday night, but ultimately fell 6-5 in overtime in their fourth game of the WHL pre-season.

Brandon wasted little time getting on the board, as Merrek Arpin opened the scoring just 1:50 into the first period with an assist from Ryan Boyce. Jimmy Egan doubled the lead at the 8:32 mark before Swift Current responded on the powerplay. William Morin converted at 13:05 with help from Trae Wilke and Daxon Yerex to bring the Broncos within one heading into the second.

Blue Bombers fall below .500 with third straight loss

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are bleeding out right now and — in a storyline that was old weeks ago — the gruesome wounds continue to be primarily and frustratingly self-inflicted.

The Blue Bombers dropped their third straight contest in a 32-21 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in front of 22,913 fans at Hamilton Stadium Friday night, falling to 6-7 and under .500 for the first time this season, in a game that was again pockmarked by costly mistakes and an anemic passing attack.

Roughriders back home against Montreal looking for third straight win

After a Labour Day Classic/Banjo Bowl sweep of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the 10-2 Saskatchewan Roughriders are back home on Saturday against 5-7 Montreal seeking their third straight win.

The Roughriders stumbled out of the gates last week on the road in Winnipeg but used a second half full of clutch plays to earn a 21-13 win over their prairie rivals. Despite his 2025 struggles that included a missed extra point on Saturday, Riders' kicker Brett Lauther knocked in five field goals to drive the Roughriders to victory.

Johnson's 6 TDs lead Gull Lake over Central Butte

Al Bundy often bragged about scoring four touchdowns in a single high school football game.

He was no Tyden Johnson.

Johnson will always be able to the tell the story of how he delivered six touchdowns for the Gull Lake Lions as they won their six-man high school football home opener, 57-38 over Central Butte.

"Oh, beautiful," Johnson said on the post-game show of Local Sports Live on Magic 97. "The game we've been wanting to play since the start of the season. Came out, executed our game plan, came out on top."

Nighthawks top Pistons in preseason tilt

The Niverville Nighthawks scored three goals in the opening period, then added a key shorthanded goal in the second, eventually defeating the visiting Steinbach Pistons 4-1 on Friday night.

Entertaining start

Right from puck drop, both teams set the tone that they would not be pushed around. Fast, scrappy, and hard checking, made it feel like a little more than a preseason game.

Broncos wrap up pre-season this weekend

The Swift Current Broncos have two games left to work out the kinks before the start of the WHL regular season.

They're in Manitoba this weekend for two pre-season games against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Swift Current heads to Brandon tonight, before hosting a special exhibition game in Virden, Manitoba, on Saturday.

"It'll be an opportunity for the guys to be together," said Broncos Head Coach Dean DeSilva. "A little bit of team bonding on the bus. We'll have some fun going out there."
