Cool, wet conditions doesn't stop MacGregor contender from capturing his first Grey Owl golf tournament

Darcy Howarth went wire-to-wire to win the 63rd annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament on Sunday in soggy conditions at Clear Lake Golf Course.

The 50-year-old from MacGregor was able to keep his hands dry enough in rainy and cool conditions to capture his first Grey Owl tournament, presented by IG Private Wealth Management.

Strong showing for HCAA at provincial track and field championships

Over 100 athletes represented the HCAA at the SHSAA Provincial Track and Field championships on Friday and Saturday in Moose Jaw. 

HCAA athletes took home 18 individual medals, including 4 gold, as well as 3 team points medals and 2 relay medals 

Hailee Woodhouse of Holdfast won the Sr. Girls Aggregate medal. 

18UAAA Red Sox stay perfect at home with a quad of weekend wins

The bats went to work big time this weekend for the East Central 18U AAA Red Sox, both on the road and at home. 

On Saturday, the Red Sox trekked to Yorkton for a pair against the Parkland Expos. Cade Armstrong led the way in Game 1, driving in four runs on a pair of hits on their way to a mercy rule 12-1 win after 5 innings.  

Mueller heading to Calder Cup championship series

The Abbotsford Canucks knocked off the Texas Stars in dramatic fashion last night to advance to the Calder Cup championship series.

Trailing 2–0 midway through the game, the Canucks stormed back with four unanswered goals—including an empty-netter—to capture the AHL Western Conference title.

Abbotsford took the series in six games. The Stars forced a return to B.C. with a 2–1 overtime win on June 5.

It marks the first time the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate has reached the league final.

Defence lawyers begin final submissions in hockey players' sex assault trial

Defence lawyers representing five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team have begun their final submissions to the judge overseeing the players' sexual assault trial.

Prosecutors will follow later this week with their submissions to Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia, who will then set a date to deliver her ruling.

Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart and Callan Foote have pleaded not guilty to sexual assault.

McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.

Aces Wild! U11 team deals another winning hand

The Cochrane Aces have done it again.

The U11 softball team captured its second tournament title of the season over the weekend, taking top honours at the Foothills Fury Classic in Okotoks.

It follows a gold-medal performance in late May at the Leduc Jets Spring Classic.

Okotoks Dawgs score 25 runs over a pair of weekend games

The Okotoks Dawgs' bats exploded on Saturday night as they hosted the Energy City Cactus Rats at Seaman Stadium.

They scored 20 runs off 17 hits, including bringing seven runners home in the fourth inning.

Four different Dawgs pitchers held the Cactus Rats to just one run off nine hits.

Hometown standout Connor Crowson went 3 for 5 at the plate with four RBI's and one walk.

The Dawgs finished off their series against the Cactus Rats yesterday, where they hung on for a 5-4 win.

Jamie Laboucane takes the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship

High River's Jason Glass is 'this close' to winning a chuckwagon finals this season.

He came in second, for the second consecutive weekend, at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship.

Glass just qualified for the final four on a slow track on Saturday night but just missed out on the $23,500 payday.

Jamie Laboucane took the title, buckle and cheque.

Jordie Fike from the Blackie area also had a good weekend finishing in 16th on Sunday and 17th overall allowing him to get his full-time permit for the rest of the season.

Beavers wrap up trip to Medicine Hat

The Weyburn Beavers dropped both games of a weekend road series against the Medicine Hat Mavericks, who continue to dominate the WCBL’s West Division. With a 6-5 extra-inning loss on Saturday and an 11-5 defeat on Sunday, the Beavers fell to 2-7 on the season, while the Mavericks improved their league-best record to 9-2. 

Saturday’s game saw the Beavers push the Mavericks to the limit, but a 10th-inning run sealed a 6-5 walk-off win for Medicine Hat.
