Canada Summer Games 2025: Team Saskatchewan opens with a solid win in men's baseball
The Canada Summer Games are off and running in St. John’s, NL with the first day of competition wrapped up on Sunday.
The Men’s Baseball contingent for Team Saskatchewan has a strong local component featuring three players and one coach from the East Central Red Sox Camp. Jarret Rude and Cade Britz of Muenster, along with Pryor Dyck of Watrous and pitching coach Chad Hofmann of Muenster are all in the mix for Team Saskatchewan.
Less than a second separated all four final wagons at the Battle of the North
It was an incredibly close final four dash for cash at the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek on Sunday.
Three of the fastest times of the day came in the final championship heat.
Chance Bensmiller pulled off the win, his second since winning it in 2008.
Calgary's Chanse Vigen came roaring through in second place with High River's Jason Glass right on his heels, with Obrey Motowylo's team placing fourth in the dash for cash.
Carter Beck's grand slam ends the Miller Express's season
The Saskatoon Berries’ Carter Beck hit a walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 16-12 victory over the Moose Jaw Miller Express, taking their Western Canadian Baseball League East Division semifinal 2-1.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Saskatoon on Friday, but was rained out and postponed to Saturday night.
Sports Round-Up: Monday, August 11
The Moose Jaw Miller Express's season came to an end at the hands of Carter Beck and the Saskatoon Berries on Saturday in the WCBL East Division semifinal Game 3 in Saskatoon.
Moose Jaw was leading 12-10 heading into the ninth inning when Saskatoon scored two to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Beck would hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th to give Saskatoon the series win. The Berries now face the Regina Red Sox in the East Division final. Regina took Game 1 by a score of 8-7 last night. Game 2 is tonight in Regina.
Berries back under pressure after exhilarating Game 3 win
The Saskatoon Berries are doing their best to avoid an early expiration date.
Entering the playoffs with championship aspirations, the Berries avoided elimination on Saturday night with a 16-12 win against the Moose Jaw Miller Express, a rain-delayed Game 3 thriller that moved Saskatoon to the next round against the Regina Red Sox, where the Berries are already facing elimination again after a series opening loss on Sunday at home.
Macklin Lakers cap stellar 2025 with provincial win in Carnduff
The Macklin Lakers senior baseball club made sure they didn't come home empty-handed from an 1800 KM round trip to Baseball Sask Tier 3 provincials in Carnduff this past weekend. The Lakers earned a spot in the championship final against the host Carnduff Astros and pulled away late for a 10-6 win to take home the title.
The Lakers must not have had any road legs as they took a 10-0 win against the Redvers Athletics in their tournament opener on Friday afternoon, moving to 2-0 on Saturday morning as Macklin was first on the diamond for a big 8-1 win over the North East Red Sox.
2025 Portage Golf Club champions crowned
The Portage Golf Club has crowned its 2025 champions after a competitive weekend on the course.
Lindsey Jordan took top honours in the Ladies division with a score of 154, while Melanie Dickenson won the Senior Ladies title with 198.
Brooke Henderson captured the Junior Girls championship at 186.

Simon Baker's grand slam powers Gulls past Dawgs in series opener
The Sylvan Lake Gulls drew first blood in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s West Division Final, knocking off the defending champion Okotoks Dawgs 7-3 on Sunday night.
Cochrane's own Simon Baker powered the Gulls to a 6-2 lead with a grand slam at the top of the sixth in front of the Dawgs' hometown crowd at Seaman Stadium, putting the Gulls one win away from advancing to the league championship series.
Kirkup honoured with award from Hockey Canada, season prep ramping up
