Rebels shut out in Medicine Hat; three-game winning streak against Tigers snapped

The Medicine Hat Tigers beat the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday night at Co-op Place for the first time in four tries this season with a 3-0 shut out win.

Newly acquired netminder Harrison Meneghin picked up the win for the Tigers, who ended their four-game losing skid. The Rebels have now lost two straight.

Andrew Basha opened the scoring midway through the second period beating Rebels netminder Chase Wutzke with a top-shelf one-timer.

In the third, Matt Paranych made it 2-0 putting home a rebound pass off of Wutzke’s pad from Gavin McKenna.

High school football Week 6 preview

The regular season is beginning to wind for high school football leagues in the area, with playoffs just around the corner.  

In Thursday’s action, the Watrous Wildcats will welcome in the Assiniboia Rockets. The two teams are tied for second spot in the standings at 2-2.  

This will be the second time Watrous and Assiniboia will meet this season, with the Wildcats earning a 77-46 road win against the Rockets back on September 6.  

Two Cochrane soccer teams in quarterfinals today

Girls soccer teams of the Cochrane and Bow Valley High are involved in two separate quarterfinal games of the Rocky View league today. 

The Cochrane Cobras finished fourth overall and host the fifth-place W. H. Croxford Cavaliers on the Ranger Field.

The Bobcats were sixth and travel to Airdrie to face the third-place Goerge McDougall Mustangs.

The winners advance to the semifinals on Oct. 15 against the Springbank Phoenix and the Bert Church Chargers.

The Cobras had a 2-3 record in the regular season and the Bobcats went winless.

HTA junior football came up short against reigning tier four provincial champs

The HTA Knights junior squad were handed their first loss of the season when they visited Lacombe to face the St. Paul Lions.

The reigning tier four Provincial champions, the St. Paul Lions took the game 42-20 against the Knights. After the first half, the Knights were down 13-0. They would get 20 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to edge out the Lions.

The Pilot Mound Pilots are Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Cross Country champions. Cole Landreville, Christian Caby, Maddox Ramage, Collin Friedrich, Gavin Hildebrand, Matsun Adams and Gavin Noseworthy captured the junior varsity boys championship banner. Landerville also finished first in the overall individual JV boys competition. Warren won the junior varsity girls championship banner; Westgate took the varsity boys while Miller Collegiate of Altona captured the varsity girls team competition.

Gabrielle Roy varsity boys & junior varsity boys and Niverville junior varsity girls brought home silver medals from the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Cross Country championships Wednesday in Clearwater. Kaden Gowryluk, Riley Chammartin, Andrew Chammartin, Zackarie Hildebrand, Brody Michaud, Tyson Laroche and Zacharie Normandeau of Les Roys were second in varsity boys. Gabrielle Roy’s Eric Verrier, Malyk Jeanson, Noah Cantin, Liam Girardin, Jamie Barnabe, Brody Moutray and Max Stewart were second in JV boys. Piper Pohrebniuk, Willa Dowse, Natalie Froese, Moxie St.

The Miller Aces are Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Cross Country champions. Kate Sawatzky, India Loewen, Kirsten Giesbrecht, Kennedy Loewen, Sienna Loewen, Halle Smith and Bella Peters captured the varsity girls championship banner Wednesday in Clearwater. Jessica Kagan, Kate Giesbrecht, Brielle Apperely, Anika Wiens, Alison Convrey and Leah Marek of the Morden Thunder finished third. Nel Vanderveen, Hayden Manness, Eastyn Beach, Shea Friesen, Sadie Spicer, Naomi Price-Wiebe and Melia Hrushowy of the Sanford Sabres finished third in JV girls.

Dyck brilliant, Broncos score three in the third in 4-1 win over Hitmen

Despite being outshot 31-16, the Swift Current Broncos would come away with a strong third period defeating the Calgary Hitmen 4-1 Wednesday night.

Both teams would get chances in the first period with power play but Calgary would take the shot total 13-1 in the first period but Reid Dyck (Winkler, MB) would stand tall on a ferocious Calgary power play with plenty of chances. But it would be a scoreless draw heading to the second.

Five Legionnaires make WHL Cup roster

Team Saskatchewan at the WHL Cup will have a pretty familiar look.

There will be five members of the Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires suiting up in the showcase between the four western provinces later this month. The Legionnaire are sending more representatives than any other U18 AAA hockey club in the province.

They include Cade Mitchell of Gull Lake, Jake Hargrave of Lucky Lake, Carter Moen of Swift Current, Trae Peterson of Sturgis and Hunter Wilm of Central Butte.
