Sports Update - Monday, October 7th
Steinbach Regional won the Morris Mavericks Invitational High School Hockey Tournament. The Sabres shaded College Jeanne-Sauve 2-1 in the championship game. The host Scorpions defeated Murdoch MacKay 23-25, 25-18, 15-13 in the final of the Lorette varsity girls volleyball tournament. Gabrielle Roy boys and Kelvin girls won the Piper Classic varsity volleyball tournaments at John Taylor Collegiate. Les Roys swept Calvin Christian 25-12, 25-15 in the boys final while the Clippers beat Gabrielle Roy 21-25, 25-20, 15-13 in the girls final.

Northlands Parkway swept Garden Valley 25-10, 25-11 in the final of the Nighthawk Invitational junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The host Zodiacs beat Steinbach Christian 23-25, 25-18, 15-6 in the final of the Garden Valley junior varsity boys volleyball tournament. Morris/St. Jean defeated Miami 25-23, 27-29, 15-12 in the championship game of the Red River Invitational varsity boys volleyball tournament. Portage Collegiate swept Miami 25-21, 25-22 in the final of the Morden Thunder varsity girls volleyball tournament.
Rebels hot start to season continues with win over Calgary
The Red Deer Rebels overcame a slow start to beat the Calgary Hitmen 5-2 at the Peavey Mart Centrium Saturday night.
Red Deer’s fourth-straight win puts the team in first place in the WHL Central Division and tops in the Eastern Conference.
The Rebels opened the scoring less than three minutes in when Steven Steranka squeezed a puck past Eric Tu for his first WHL goal.
Calgary would reply on the power play when a shot from Reese Hamilton found its way past Rhett Stoesser.
Gens sweep weekend play heading into home opener
Two games in the win column have set the stage for the Cochrane Generals home opener on Oct. 11.
Friday night's win in Three Hills came down to a shootout in a low-scoring match. The Gens lone goal in regulation came in the second from Nathan Sherriffs with his first of the regular season from Marco Rossi and Christopher Ugbaja. Just 90 seconds later, Kaden Raniseth scored for the Thrashers to tie the game.
When overtime proved nothing, Diago Coelho and Brendan Thubron scored in the shootout, and goalie Braydon Yonin foiled two Thrashers to secure the win.
Broncos back to .500 in comeback win over Wheat Kings
Ty Coupland would bury the shootout winner and Joey Rocha would be terrific in a 32 save effort to help the Swift Current Broncos get to the .500 mark with 4-3 comeback win over the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday night.
The Wheat Kings would fire 12 pucks at Joey Rocha (Nanaimo, BC) but it would be shot twelve that would solve the Broncos goaltender to get the lone goal in the first from Carter Klippenstein at 19:25 to give the hometown Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead after 1.
Paronuzzi, Kaiser, Fuchs lead Pistons over Stamps
The Steinbach Pistons extended their winning streak to five after defeating the Swan Valley Stampeders 6-2 on Saturday night.
Zach Burleigh got the start for Steinbach and he was tested early, making several key saves to keep the game scoreless.
A power play would put Steinbach on the board first as Jackson Kostiuk took a pass in the slot and while he didn’t get off his grade A shot, he got enough of the puck to put it on goal and it somehow found the back of the net for his first of the season. Noah Szabo and Connor Paronuzzi had the assists.
Bjarnason returns to Brandon for another season
Another young athlete has returned to Manitoba to take on what may be his final season of junior hockey.
Carson Bjarnason, from Carberry, MB, is back with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL after getting into the preseason with the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers. He notes that the experience taught him a lot.
Warriors double Tigers in Saturday night tilt
The Moose Jaw Warriors played a hard-fought road game to come away with a win in Medicine Hat.
The Warriors doubled up the Tigers, 6-3, to secure their first road win of the 2024-25 season on Saturday night at Co-op Place.
“We played hard, we knew that we had to, we knew what we were facing here tonight,” Warriors associate coach Scott King said.
Boyd's heroics lead Weyburn to win over PA
The U18 AAA Weyburn Gold Wings were looking for their first win of the young season Saturday afternoon as they entertained the Prince Albert Bears at Crescent Point Place. The Gold Wings would get a stellar performance between the pipes from Tila Boyd while three players found the back of the net as Weyburn went on to a 3-0 victory.
The Gold Wings opened the scoring late in the first period, as Jade Olszewski put the puck behind Bears goalie Annika Neufeldt with 3:03 remaining in the period. Her goal was assisted by Hallie Parada.
