Canada has unveiled its priorities for the G7 leaders' summit just one week before it gets underway in Alberta as the government defends its decision to invite India to the summit.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's office says Ottawa's top priority for the summit will be strengthening global peace and security, which includes countering foreign interference and transnational crime, as well as improving responses to wildfires.
Alberta resumes buying U.S. alcohol, months after pause meant to fight tariffs
Alberta is buying American alcohol and gambling machines again, three months after Premier Danielle Smith announced restrictions aimed at fighting back against U.S. tariffs.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally said Friday that the move signals a "renewed commitment to open and fair trade" with the United States.
Smith said in March that the province would no longer buy U.S. alcohol and video lottery terminals, or sign contracts with American companies. Alberta's liquor stores are privately owned but must order stock through the provincial government.

Red Deer adds major update to downtown parking

City of RD and Heritage Ranch reach compromise to continue operating
The City of Red Deer and Heritage Ranch have reached a compromise that enables Joel Martens Training Inc to continue operating at Heritage Ranch until October 6, 2025. Heritage Ranch will comply with key conditions outlined in the agreement, which will ensure continuity of service for residents and visitors and allows planned events and activities at the site to proceed as scheduled.

Wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in some areas.

Lacombe County Farm Safety Day this Wednesday
Lacombe County will be hosting Lacombe County Farm Safety Day being held this Wednesday, June 11th at the Lacombe County Operations Building.
The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 320 Grade 5 students from 11 different schools across Lacombe County.
A barbeque lunch will be served from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., which would be an ideal time for photo opportunities or other media access. This year, the Honourable RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, will be attending the morning portion of the event.

Teen mentoring program expands to Blackfalds
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe and District (BBBSLD) is expanding its Teen Mentoring Program to Iron Ridge Elementary Campus in Blackfalds, following the program’s success in Lacombe.
The expansion was made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation’s Community Microgrant program as part of its Winter 2024 funding round.
The Teen Mentoring Program connects trained teen mentors with elementary-aged students during school hours, aiming to reduce social isolation and support community wellness.
Red Deer Catholic student wins at national level
A Red Deer Catholic high school student has won big at a national competition.
St. Joseph High School Grade 12 student Dane Schmidt won a gold medal in the Welding–Secondary competition at the Skills Canada National Competition held in Regina, Sask.
The Skills Canada National Competition was held on May 29 and 30 and featured the top skilled trades and technology students from across the country.
