RDP Applied Research Specialist receives Leadership Excellence Award

A Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Applied Research Specialist in the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing Technology Access Centre has been recognized by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).  

Alicia Cafferata has been named the silver recipient of the Leadership Excellence Award for Non-Managerial Staff for her contributions to RDP and innovation communities.   

Water restrictions put in place for Red Deer County

On Wednesday, April 1st, an information alert was sent to residents and businesses of Red Deer County through the information alert app.

The purpose of the alert was to inform residents and ratepayers that as of May 1st, all communities with municipal water systems in Red Deer County will enter into stage 1 outdoor water restrictions. Stage 1 is a voluntary restriction.

Lacombe Fire Department doing training near Len Thompson Fishpond

Lacombe Fire Department have posted that they will behind Len Thompson Fishpond conducting wildland fire training.

Members from Lacombe Fire, Bashaw Fire and No Surrender Fire services learning about NFPA 1140 Wildland fire fighting.

This training will give the knowledge base for members to make the safest decision while fighting grass fire and wildland fire areas.

Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke in the area.

Ponoka Stampede Auction breaks record

Over half a million dollars was raised Friday night in the 2024 Ponoka Stampede Chuckwagon Canvas Auction.

According to a story from Billy Melville, the average bid on the tarps was $15,361.11 and the highest bid on the night went to Pidherneys who paid $32,000.00. Prices ranged from $7000.00 to $32,000.00.

In total the record auction brought in $576,500.00 for the Ponoka Stampede. This is up $23,500.00 from last year.

Another road closure for Red Deer starts Monday

Motorists are advised that the intersection of 53 Street and 47 Avenue will be closed from May 6 to May 21 as water main replacements are installed.

Residents and motorists in the area will note that 47 Avenue between 55 and 53 Street has already been closed since early April.

Motorists are advised to detour via 45 Avenue and 48 Avenue; 55 Street will be unaffected. Please obey all signs and use extra caution while crews are present. Please find an alternate route if possible

CPKC Update

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference announced the results of its strike vote this week, with 98 percent of members voting in favor of a strike mandate.

Negotiations have been taking place this week with CPKC for its Train and Engine, and Rail Traffic Controllers

In a statement on the CPKC website they emphasize that they don't want to see a work stoppage and remain focused on reaching a balanced and responsible agreement through the collective bargaining process.

Watch for volunteers on Central Alberta highways tomorrow

Happening tomorrow (Saturday, May 4th) volunteer groups will be cleaning up trash along provincial highways during the annual highway cleanup. 

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 4, volunteers in orange safety vests will be collecting trash along provincial highways.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, obey signs, watch for pedestrians, and use caution when passing cleanup crews.

The Little Potato Company continues to grow its operations

The company opening its newly expanded facility in Nisku.

Earlier this year, we told you the company had qualified for Alberta's Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit and was granted a conditional approval for a tax credit of up to nearly $1.3 million.

The program provides a 12% non-refundable tax credit when corporations invest $10 million or more in a project to build or expand a value-added agri-processing facility in Alberta.

2024 Drought Response Plan released

There are currently 51 water shortage advisories in place in Alberta for select water management areas.

The recent snowfall and moisture have been a welcome sight, and there is growing optimism with long-range forecasts calling for a wetter Spring and Summer, but there is no guarantee.

Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, says we must remain prepared for drought now and into the future.

"Alberta’s Drought Response Plan is foundational to that work and will help our province respond to all levels of drought for years to come."
