2024 Drought Response Plan released

There are currently 51 water shortage advisories in place in Alberta for select water management areas.

The recent snowfall and moisture have been a welcome sight, and there is growing optimism with long-range forecasts calling for a wetter Spring and Summer, but there is no guarantee.

Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, says we must remain prepared for drought now and into the future.

"Alberta’s Drought Response Plan is foundational to that work and will help our province respond to all levels of drought for years to come."

Foreign interference may have changed 2021 result in one riding, inquiry finds

Foreign meddling attempts didn’t change who won the last two federal elections in Canada but they may have changed the result in one riding in 2021, a public inquiry concluded Friday.

A preliminary report by commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue said the extent of the impact of foreign interference in particular ridings is uncertain, though the number of races involved is small.

"The ultimate effects of foreign interference remain uncertain," she said in her interim report.

Man arrested after perfume spraying incident at Bower Place

Red Deer RCMP have arrested a man following an incident at Bower Place.

On Apr. 27th, 2023, at around 11:00 a.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a call from the public of a man acting erratically and spraying themselves in the eye with perfume.

Officers went to Bower Place and asked the suspect to leave the premises. When he refused to exit the mall, he was placed under arrest. The suspect became agitated and approached the officer, the officer attempted to gain control of the suspect but the male became increasingly combative towards the officer.

Red Deer Hospice Society opens registration for major fundraiser

An important fundraiser for the Red Deer Hospice Society is coming up on Sunday, June 9th. It is the 17th Annual Run/Hike event at Bower Ponds. 

Janelle Spady, The Donor Relations and Event Coordinator for the society talks about the importance of the event.

"It is one of our larger fundraisers for Red Deer Hospice, and we're hoping to raise $50,000 in donations and pledges. All of which stays in Red Deer to support end of life care in our community."

RDCRS continuing partnership with Taiwanese schools 

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Education Department of the New Taipei City Government in Taiwan.  

The MOU builds on a four-year-old partnership with Taichung, Hui-Wen High School, and other schools in Taiwan.   

Under the MOU, RDCRS will welcome grade 10 students from schools in New Taipei City to the 2+1 program.   

Local Oilers fans chime in on who they want to see for round-two

For fans of the Edmonton Oilers, all they can do now is wait to see who the next round opponent will be.

It will either be the Vancouver Canucks, or the Nashville Predators. Vancouver has a 3-2 game lead going into tonight's match which starts at 5 pm from Nashville.

Tank had a chance to sit down and chat with some local fans who gave their thoughts on who they would like to see in round two.

BASF announces 2024 Growing Home winners on the Prairies

The Growing Home with BASF initiative was launched in Western Canada in 2023 as a way to give back to the communities where BASF customers live, work and play. 

BASF will distribute $100,000 between four organizations in four provinces to support local initiatives in rural Canadian communities

This year’s program received 624 nominations from growers, which were narrowed down to 12 finalists, three each in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Eckville resident spins his way to $800,000 

An Eckville resident is $800,000 richer after playing The Bigger Spin wheel on May 2.  

Jason MacEachern purchased the winning The Bigger Spin ticket from the Rimbey Value Drug Mart. 

“I was so excited to see I had the winning ticket,” MacEachern said. “I high-fived the guy behind me and immediately called my buddy to tell him.”  

Ottawa will appoint commissioner to oversee treaties with Indigenous Peoples: Trudeau

The federal government is planning to create a new agent of Parliament to oversee modern treaty implementation, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says will ensure Ottawa is held to account no matter who is in power.

He announced the plan to appoint a commissioner for modern treaty implementation Tuesday in Gatineau, Que., at a second annual meeting of self-governing Indigenous governments.

"This is a lasting commitment to be a better treaty partner," he said.
