Rebels sign defenceman Nate Yellowaga

 The Red Deer Rebels are excited to announce that defenceman Nate Yellowaga has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club.

Yellowaga was selected by the Rebels in round nine, 194th overall at the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 2008-born rearguard played in 54 games with the Brooks Bandits (AJHL/BCHL) over the last two years, compiling 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists.) The Calgary, AB native added two assists in 17 playoff games.

Yellowaga has committed to the Maine Black Bears (NCAA Division I).

CN deploying Poseidon and Trident to help fight the wildfires

The ongoing wildfire situation stretches from northern Ontario right across the prairies, with the threat to homes and communities and thousands of people being evacuated.

The Assistant Vice-President of Grain for CN, David Przednowek, says they are monitoring the situation very closely as their rail lines run through the north.

CN reports they've had some delays moving grain in and out of the Port at Thunder Bay but are also doing what they can to help with the wildfires. 

Possible traffic delays near Blindman River due to paving

Drivers travelling around Blackfalds could experience delays near the Blindman River due to paving in the area.

Hwy. 2 southbound near Township Road 392 may see the right-hand lane closed, with speed reduced to 80 km/h due to roadwork. 

Drivers should expect speed reductions and be aware of workers in the area.

The paving is expected to end at 7 p.m.

Free N95 masks available for Sylvan Lake residents

The Town of Sylvan Lake has small and medium N95 masks available for residents, courtesy of the Canadian Red Cross. These are free for residents for those who are having issues dealing with smoke blowing in from wildfires.

There's a limit of two per Town of Sylvan Lake resident, while supplies last.

Food for Fines returns to Blackfalds Library

If you haven’t finished your book by the due date, there’s no need to worry the Blackfalds Public Library is once again running its "Food for Fines" program throughout the month of June.

Book lovers can donate non-perishable food items at the front desk to have their late fees waived.

“Whatever they bring in, we will waive them out whether it’s a few cans or a few bags, we will waive the whole late fee clear.” said Kelly McKee, Community Outreach Coordinator at the Blackfalds Servus Credit Union Public Library.

Lacombe students raise more than $10K for cancer research at Relay for Life

École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School is celebrating the success of its recent Relay for Life event, held May 30 at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.

With 270 participants taking part, the school community raised an impressive $10,737 in support of cancer research.

Canada focusing on peace, energy security and new partnerships at G7 meeting: Carney

Canada has unveiled its priorities for the G7 leaders' summit just one week before it gets underway in Alberta as the government defends its decision to invite India to the summit.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office says Ottawa's top priority for the summit will be strengthening global peace and security, which includes countering foreign interference and transnational crime, as well as improving responses to wildfires.
